zippypooz
Hi all, im thinking about refurbing my alloys (19" nismos) and im wondering whats the best way to go...either a traditional spray job or powder coating...which looks best and which is more durable as ive had conflicting views!! HELP!!
jonny the mod
Powder coating wins every time my friend. Ive re built Lambretta scooters and always powder coated. They will last, but paint does give a finer finish !!!! Obviously the bodywork needs paint but the wheels take all the punishment, so powder coat.... zippypooz
Hi Jonny, so powder coating is more durable?? so im just presuming its just not as shiny then??
Bems
I have the same wheels and the same problem. Everyone says powdercoat for durability but fact is they will look nowhere as good as a refurb to as was out the factory. Problem being that the later would require a bit more upkeep! OV53
If you don't scrimp and take the wheels to somewhere decent then painting is the way forward.
zippypooz
hmmm i'm sorta thinking spraying so far, just a refurb to the original finish, nothing fancy, but i'm gonna see where this post goes too!! Although i do like a nice shiny finish lol!! Thanks all!!

No i'm definately not wanting to scrimp...its worth paying for isnt it!! Just a matter of finding a good sprayer.
OV53
Well I can vouch for The Wheel Specialist. They have centres all over the country and if you say that you know somone from the forum who went to the Westerhope branch and got a full set of 19s done for £360 with a courtesy car then I'm sure they will price match. That's same day service too.

OV53
I got exactly what I asked for and they balanced the wheels too. The one I went to has a contract with the Jaguar garage for any wheel colour changes. I got mine in a satin anthracite finish and they are like a completely new set of wheels. They basically dip them in acid, shot blast, paint, bake, re-tyre (or even put new tyres on if you have a set) and balance them. They can diamond cut them as well if you need it. Overall the finish is like what you would expect on a brand new set of wheels. Check my thread out for a few photos and examples of the work. http://www.350z-uk.com/index.php?/topic/73301-Booked-in-for-wheel-refurbishment....

zippypooz
Hi mate keep them the same iv'e got gunmetal on mine and going to change back to oem. Oh really? you prefer yours as they were originally since you refurbed yours?? Edited August 18, 2013 by zippypooz
OV53
Yours would look miles better in an anthracite finish man! It's all a matter of opinion when it comes to colour choice though, just because one person likes the standard silver that you see on pretty much any car with alloy wheels doesn't mean that it is your taste. zippypooz
True, although i like anthracite but would worry that the alloys wouldnt stand out as much...decisions decisions lol
Suits
I had a set of my OEM's re-done on my S2000. They were my old track wheels that I had done 'Spoon Blue' but I liked the look of them so much I used them fro my dailys and get them refurbished again. After about 6 months they did start to flake in very small areas, whether this was down to poor prep, further high track temps or just the fact it was a poor job I'm not sure. If I was to get 370Z Ray's done, I'd probably go powdercoat route. The refurb was a good finish though.
