What are the odds? Seeing the very next reg to yours

Bizarre moment outside my work today when another silver 350z stopped outside with the very next registration plate to mine. Apart from the minor heart attack I had when the first 6 letters of the registration matched and I thought the audacious thief was parading it in front of me, it's even more bizarre that my car was probably registered hundreds of miles away.

What are the odds?

I don't know how they now but under the system they had in use in the 70's they used to allocate dealers registration numbers in blocks so it was fairly common to see the next number plate to yours. I think it must be much more random these days.

AFAIK the new prefix reg plates are typically done by region. I can't remember what it is exactly, but when my better half worked at Toyota Bath ALL their new cars left with WN or WG at the start of the plate. So you might well find that the Zed you saw came from the same dealership.

I've lost the picture sadly, but i did this with a beemer i had once.

Mine was V328 GEN and one day i parked at Old Trafford next to the exact same model/spec/colour car, which was V329 GEN. I couldnt believe it. Mine was better though as both cars were BMW 328's so my plate was cooler.

Indeed, just checked and 'OE' means it was registered in Oxford. A mere 206 miles away.

I remember there was a couple of FORD COSWORTH escort's in Redline magazine once, they were owned by twins and one was registered 80 OST and one was 800 ST (boost) and together they looked near identical!

Reason for edit: clarification
