nowhereboy
Picked up my 04 350z today and the thing litteraly broke down on the drive home from the garage. Car pulls fine, at first everything felt as it should, tho it is quite mechanical, it has a lot of feel through the pedals and has a slight vibration through the gear stick but I presume this is normal? So there I was, driving my car home, really happy with my purchase then bam... the car cut out whilst sat in traffic, all the lights flashes on the dash so I turned off the ignition and started her up again, the engine management light is now on and I drove home slowly in it. It only has a months warranty on it, I'm going to ring the garage but I wanted to see if you guys had any idea what it might be first?? Is this the start of a nightmare of a car, or a simple fix? I'm considering asking for my money back. Edited June 29, 2013 by nowhereboy
Vik54
If you're sure you didn't just stall and it is definitely the engine management light then take it straight back - is it a specialist garage - will they have any clue how to fix it? If in doubt just tell them deal is off and walk away
Vik54
The vibration is normal BTW
KyleR
You really need to get the error code read, could be something simple like an 02 sensor or something much worse, hopefully it's the former.
nowhereboy
I took it straight to my local garage but they were shut! Im so gutted, I've saved for ages for this car and I've just paid out 600 quid for insurance, I've left myself with very little to live on this month and then this happens. I Need a car for work too. Complete nightmare situation. I'm going to call the garage now.
nowhereboy
Ok after a quick read through some other threads it sounds like its the crank shaft sensor. I have the EXACT same symptoms as the guys in those threads. Im gonna limp back to the garage in it now. I can't help but think they knew about this and re-set the ecu before I test drove it. Must remain calm!
The Chubby Ninja
not a good start for you mate but the garage will need to sort it or refund your money. I didn't have a good start with mine either but pushed on and now I love it. good luck
jonny the mod
Feel for you mate... Ive a feeling you were correct in saying the garage new about it and just reset it, hoping it would last over a month. Do yourself a favour and google the garage to check on their history (hopefully you have done this anyway). If you feel that they fixed it again a tad quickly, please get yourself an RAC/AA full inspection done and go back to them. I no this is an extra cost, but it will at least give you an independent view on your pride and joy. I hope it works out mate and don't forget the car loves you !!!!! Its the garage that's nasty. Please update us. Jonny
Vlad
Hope it all works out for you mate! I had problems with mine from the start as well... Dodgy fuel sender- so on the way home, after 20mins picking car up, it's died on me as I've ran out of petrol and it was still showing 80odd miles to empty! Then found massive fuel leak! And garage definitely knew about it as they passed MOT a day before I picked it up!! (Parkway motor group in Mansfield - AVOID at any costs!!!) all sorted now, after I done everything myself! So hope nothing major with yours and you can fix it easy and cheap and enjoy it!
rtbiscuit
Sorry to hear this, where did you buy it from?
sloutrou
Did you get it sorted? There is a way to read the error code by doing what some call the pedal dance, someone else on here will know the specifics I'm sure. Rest easy that you've bought it from a garage and not privately, so at least you have some come back if you need to go down that route. rtbiscuit
Trade link That's not what I was getting at. It could be a place someone has dealt with before, could be a genuine error. Just need the full story, not the half bits. And if its a bad garage its good to now so people go there aware in the future.
nowhereboy
Quick update guys, I tried to take it to my local garage first for them to check out but they close early on saturdays. I took it back to the dealership and the guy was a bit of a ****. Seemed pretty uninterested and said something like "wow I can't believe that's happened, I even drove that car myself before putting it on the forecourt" I get the impression they took the car in part exchange, took it for a quick spin then put it straight back on the forecourt without checking a damn thing. Anyway, he said bring the car back along first thing monday morning and they will check it out for me. I had to drive the car for work today and have done about 40 miles with the engine management light on, it hasn't missed a beat since the incident this morning. I'm hopeful that this is a simple fix but I've gotta be honest it's got me having second thoughts about this car, I've got a horrid feeling it's going to turn into a money pit and i'm going to end up regretting buying it. It's put a pretty big downer on a day that should have been awesome. I plan on letting these guys sort it out then I'll take it to a specialist garage local to me and get the guys to give it a proper once over. If they find anything serious I will be requesting my money back. I could really do without all this hassle at the minute...... On a brighter note.... at least she looks nice anyway
The Chubby Ninja
hope you get it sorted hassel free. it could just be one of those things that could happen any time. oh and its in the best colour aswell
nowhereboy
Yea dude, hopefully it's just something daft, like I said the car feels fine to drive now but the engine light is still on. It doesn't exactly fill me with confidence when collecting a car and not even managing to get it home before problems start tho! On another note its amazing how many dodgy looks I get off people when driving this, oh and every single guy in a hot hatch seems to feel the need to want to race me which I find pretty annoying too. Didn't expect this car to get as much attention as it does. Not sure if thats a good thing or a bad thing just yet haha.
The Chubby Ninja
yeah when I picked mine up the I drove straight down to England to my cousins and the engine light came on, I really wasn't happy and phoned the garage. when I took it back they said they fixed it and it came on again. turned out to be a duff 02 sensor but they had just reset it and it came back on again. a$$holes!
nowhereboy
Thats shocking man! Do they honestly think that we are not going to come straight back to the garage as soon the light comes back on anyway? Unreal. I'm desperate to get my car in with a specialist to check it out, there's nowhere open tommorow tho and I'm back at work monday. A few people have told me to get my money back but I think thats a bit extreme.... It's got full service history and 2 owners, the last one was a Lady... It's only done 57k surely it should be ok? Dblock
Just get the code read. To be fair it might not of had any problems. What did you expect the garage to do. Give it a 6 month road test I don't mean that in the way it will read but see if from the other side. Do you have a code reader does your mates? If not you can do a pedal dance. If a member is close by they can show you and read the code for free. I personally think it was unlucky. I don't think it's a duff car or you've been "done" just unfortunate. Once you get it sorted and go for a drive it will be so so worth it.
Ekona
I plan on letting these guys sort it out then I'll take it to a specialist garage local to me and get the guys to give it a proper once over. If they find anything serious I will be requesting my money back. Not sure if you know this, but you can't just do that. If there is anything wrong, you have to give the supplying dealer a fair chance to fix it before you can even think about rejection. The SOGA does give you an incredible amount of protection, but you do have to go the right way about it. Get the code read ASAP, you can do the pedal dance to get it (there's a sticky on here on how to do that), and then one of us will hopefully be able to put your mind at ease. Jetpilot
Sad that a good day turned bad. Think it would be good information for future possible owners to be aware of where you bought it
rtbiscuit
Where are you located, there are lots of us like me who have code readers, most won't mind helping you read the code.
sloutrou
On the up side, every bit of help and advice you might need is right here on this forum, and some fantastic traders to supply all the parts you might need
nowhereboy
Yea, I think I overreacted a little bit yesterday. I did expect the garage to at least check the car over before selling it tho. I'm based near newcastle upon tyne, if anyone is local and wants to check it out I'd be super grateful. I have since found reviews for the garage and all of them are terrible, seen a few comments about them doing dodgy MOT's and quick fix ups to shift cars. It's not like I bought it from a small dealership either, the place is a massive trade site. Oh well, thats another life lesson learnt. I will give them a chance to get it sorted tho, I'm hopeful that its nothing serious. The car is sat there on my drive dying to be driven!! 4RE Leather
Crank shaft or cam sensor? Cam sensor is situated at the back. It's an easy enough fix so DIY. approx £80 for a new one when I watched one being done a few months back. Your car I believe only has 1 where HR has 2 at the front! .
