Finally a serious answer as I've had the same problem! I recently starting using this:

I've filled 6 small linen "pot pourri bags" with the stuff and placed 2 on the boot, 2 on the soft top and 2 on the bonnet, similar to these but without the flowery stuff:

It does the trick for me and removing 6 small bags from the car isn't a hassle, although they do leave a little dust at first so you may want to know them around a bit before placing on your car.

Available from Amazon & Ebay:

12 bore. And solves your engine cooling problems all in one go.

More seriously, cats are a pain the neck for all sorts or reasons where we are, including car bonnet damage, and and I'd held off posting on this thread before now but sometime before 5 o'clock this morning one was clearly getting nesting birds very agitated such that it had to be seen off before we could get back to sleep.

Hate the things with a passion and if people want them as pets they ought to keep them locked up indoors.

My girlfriends mother recently installed one of them cat deterrent things, basically a small outdoor device that gives off a high pitched sound cats don't like triggered by motion sensor. It's seems to be working as the little furballs stay well clear of her garden. I'm not sure where one would purchase this but googles your friend. Hope this helps? If not anything citrus they hate... Maybe grow a lemon tree? :p

There must be similar versions in the UK, this is a Kiwi version of a cat deterrent.
