invame
Hi all, Is placing the car in 1st or reverse gear (depending on the direction of the slope) when parked supposed to stop the car from rolling? It doesn't with mine - at all! Not even on a gentle slope. Would this indicate some kind of a problem? I've not noticed any problems with the clutch or gears through normal driving. spursmaddave
I would say it does Always left mine in gear on slopes, never had an issue...
Mopedmark
Always leave cars in gear if the handbrake failed it would stop it from rolling
invame
Right, thanks. Any ideas what I need to look at then?
spursmaddave
I'm sure someone more knowledgable will be along soon but if I had to guess I would start with the clutch
Chris`I
It will move forward/backward a little when in gear but it should be very obvious once the gears mesh and stop the car. If it doesnt that suggests to me the clutch is fubared. Are you sure you let it move far enough before the gears caught it?
Ekona
If it doesn't lock up then your gearbox is shot to absolute pieces. I'm betting it's fine and you've just not let it move far enough to lock up.
invame
I think so. The car park where I park it is bowl shaped so if I didn't use the handbrake it would roll to the centre of it - around 10 to 15 metres.
spursmaddave
Simple park as normal, cut the engine, leave in gear and release the handbrake.... Be brave, you should move back a little but thats it
invame
missed that last post - I have tested the above and it does indeed roll to the centre of the car park.

S1 HNK
If your gears don't hold the car then its knackered and I needs urgent attention!!
glrnet
missed that last post - I have tested the above and it does indeed roll to the centre of the car park. It rolls to the centre of the car park with the car in 1st gear and the handbrake off?
Ekona
Is it definitely in gear? 100%? If so, you need a new gearbox ASAP. As in yesterday.
invame
You're making me doubt myself now. I'll double check it in the morning and post back. The only reason it became an issue to me was because I misadjusted the handbrake at the weekend which basically left me without a handbrake until I adjusted it properly. This is how I think I know - because I couldn't get it to stop rolling with the handbrake misadjusted and basically non-operational.
Keyser
This is not an auto is it? In gear clutch up in first gear - if your car rolls down a car park then you didn't just drive it into said carpark

invame
No, it's a manual. Odd thing is the gears seem fine whilst driving. I've owned it a year and I've not noticed any degradation. I'll double check in the morning to make sure I haven't gone mad if nothing else.

Keyser
Get a compression check then mind you the one we stripped with the 5 blown pistons still held on the gears Edited June 5, 2013 by Keyser
kbeast35
unless your keeping your foot on the clutch when you let the handbrake off this will not happen

WhackyWill
Handbrakes on Zeds are not brilliant, and if I did not leave mine in reverse with the handbrake fully on it would be parked next to my cooker in the kitchen..!! It dosen't matter leaving it in gear as you cannot start it in gear as you have to depress the clutch to start it....Me thinks somebody having a little laugh at the expense of the Zed Community..!! :scare:

Daryl
Just remember you have left it in gear though, or you may end up with a huge whole in your leg,and ruin a door on the corner of your house.
