A9H-RX
Anyone ever had to change one of these? Mine sounds slacked and can only assume it is stretched from the torque stress of the forced induction and quite scared it might give or jump.. I never really noticed the chain noise until someone said and now I keep thinking about it, I don't know if it's me being OTT or its actually getting worse? ZMANALEX
PM zmanalex he will know, never usually an issue with a standard car. That certainly used to be the case Graham, however with these cars getting older and mileages creeping up, it now has become an issue that I have experienced more and more over the past few years. The chains have been known to stretch so much that the timing goes slightly out. I had one 4 weeks ago where one of the hydraulic tensioners was fully extended and the chain was rattling off the casing. Fortunately this is an exception rather than the rule but still a worrying issue. OP: best to let a 350Z engine specialist have a listen to it for an informed diagnoses before you start pulling the motor. Alex.
Wasso
Wow, and didn't Nissan state there's no need to change these? So technically high mileage cars 'could' have an issue as time goes on?
mattross1313
Mine sounds like it rattles for the first second or so after start up, but then settles down - i guess it gets back under tension or something? This could be the early signs of the issue?
jell36
Alex - have you noticed if there is an average mileage at which the problem occurs or is it random? I know driving style will affect it greatly but just wondering if there's been a few at around the same mileage.

There appears to be no pattern (mileage or time) to this issue but Nissan have upgraded the chain slippers and guides so they do recognise that there is an issue but will never admit it. Although I have seen a few of these issues it is still quite rare and really my view is that you do not have a problem until you have a problem and no one should really be overly concerned about potential chain, slipper, guide or tensioner wear. A9H-RX
The engine was a donor. No idea what the mileage was but its done 16k since being fully forged and boosted.. But I could imagine the 200+ extra torque hasn't helped. It's going for a remap on Tuesday to 500bhp, I'm hoping it doesn't let go :/
Wasso
When did Nissan apply the upgrade?
ZMANALEX
When did Nissan apply the upgrade? The upgraded parts only apply if you are buying replacement parts. All the original VQ35DE motors will have the original design as far as I know. Nissan applied the change with a superceded part number circa 18 months ago. Alex.
