ODB2 Code 0340 Cam Shaft Position Sensor (Phase)

After an enthusiastic drive I stopped the car. Shortly after I had to move my car. When I tried to start it the MIL light plus the slip and Traction control lights came on.

The car started but took about 2 seconds of cranking to fire. Later the MIL light remained on but the car started and drove normally.

Ive plugged in my ODB2 reader and its showing code 0340. The workshop manual shows it to be Cam Shaft Position Sensor (Phase) in Bank 1.

I reset the code and again it came on when restarting the car shortly after a drive. Today however It came on while I was driving.

Im going to take a look at it tomorrow for any obvoius wiring damage.

Has anybody else had this problem?

And will driving the car (gently) with the light on do any damage?

Yes I have a similar intermittent starting problem. The strange thing is that it effects my rpm gauge and for some reason you can hear the a/c start up when the dial is in the off position. I have a suspect battery, but it still occurs on occasions when the battery is full charged. Sometimes if I wiggle the gear shifter, or start her in a different gear its fine, which leads me to believe it is a crankshaft position sensor. I have a new one to fit, but have got round to it, apparently its a 10 minute job.

I think there was a z33 recall regarding the sensors back in 2003/04. Will let you know how I get on

I forgot to add I recently had a bizarre problem that might be related.

A few weeks ago I left my car in a locked car park over night, I went down to pick it up and found the car completely dead.

No signs of life when trying to unlock and even when turning the key.

I hadn't left the lights on but I guessed maybe the boot light had drained the battery or the battery had given up. I went and got a ticket for the car and went to call a friend to get a jump start. Not thinking for a moment I went to lock the car using the blipper and it responded normally, the harzard lights flashed and the car locked. So I unlocked it via the blipper and got in. The car started normally with no problems however I noticed the following:

All the stored radio stations has been lost

Both trip mileages had reset to zero

I see the workshop manual references problems with the starting system as a possible cause of the P0340 error.

Just an update if its useful to anyone.

I found the positive battery terminal was loose, very loose. It could be lifted off!

The whole battery was loose, the rear nut was missing.

I've secure the battery and cables, ill wait to see if the fault comes back.

Finally fixed the fault by replacing the sensor.

Cost just over £80 including P and P from Zmanalex which is around £10 cheaper than Nissan.

I figured out as per the bulletin the sensor was cutting out ONLY when hot. For example I was driving the short distance to work everyday no problem but when I went for a longer drive it would always light up.

Changing the sensor is easy, just push in the clip under the plug (I.e. towards the car) until it clicks off. I found it needed quite a hard push.

Then undo the bolt and wiggle out the sensor.

Replacement is the reverse.

Hmm ive had this problem

first two times on track thought it was a over heating issue, but then had it cruising at 60 on a cold winter night and on this Saturday

it did it again just parked up on idle.

anyone got any idea the sensor costs? **(im a muppit and didnt read the post above)

2005 car.

I have this issue:

First time I was in stop/start traffic, car gave a little lurch then the engine, ESP and skid lights came on. Car in limp mode. 2-3 secs of cranking to start, usually bursts into life immediately.

Got home left car for few hours. Tried to start car, started straight away with smooth idle. Engine light still on but ESP and skid lights off. Car drives as it should.

Took to my Zed specialist he said CP0340 (camshaft position sensor, passenger side) but could be many things from Flywheel to stretched timing chain to crankshaft position sensor (99,800mls). Cleared codes. Drove home fine. Went out later, very light traffic and same issue as before but car stalled this time at traffic lights as I was setting off.

Heat related? I'm hoping it is and just the sensor like Mack. Ben at Emperor Garage has ordered OEM part and will fit. Will post on what happens.

Good to hear someone's finding this info usefull.

As Toon Chris said you have the classic symptoms. If you take a look at the recall for the American cars intermittent failure when the sensor is hot is a key sign.

Let us know how you get on.

The recall:

The engine may stall at times due to a failed crankshaft position sensor and/or camshaft position sensor, These sensors can fail intermittently as they warm with the engine. Sensors on certain models have been recalled by Nissan and will be replaced as necessary. Please visit our recall section for this model to see if your vehicle is covered by this recall
