kris
This was mentioned in busters speaker install thread. I intend on replacing and amping the front speakers and leaving the rears disconnected, however JL and Hertz make 6.5 subwoofers which are the same size diameter as the rear speaker mounts. Now subwoofers normally have to boxed dont they? Is there any way of mounting maybe two 6.5 subs in the rear speaker mounts? This would make for a great stealth install to go with the front upgrade. Where would the amp go? Ideas appreciated.
Stutopia
Would it not resonate like crazy? I had a straight replacement sub for the bose whoopee cushion that came as stock, nothing massive, not even a dedicated amp, but when the bass drops on something really phat the whole back half of the car leaps a foot in the air. And it's been dynamatted too. Edited April 5, 2013 by SuperStu
wizard
i've been thinking of doing something like this as well but my AV guy says 6.5" subs are useless. Would prefer not to have a big sub in the boot, so this is one solution. Irrespective, I think all amps will go in the cubby hole behind the passenger seat for me. I like the stealth setup. un1eash
I built a rack for my 2 amps and placed it where the old bose sub went leaving the passenger glove box free. You could do something with the 6.5" subs but would need to find a way to make an enclosure for them. A small box under the strut still leaves a decent size boot. kris
Yea it probably would resonate which is why I was wondering about the boxing? 6.5 inch subs may not be very useful but two of them may be ok? I listen alot of house music etc which needs punchy bass rather than window rattling low down bass.
BulletMagnet
Looked at these yet? http://www.ebay.com/itm/PAIR-SWS-6-5X-EARTHQUAKE-4-OHM-SHALLOW-MOUNT-200W-MAX-6-5-SUBWOOFERS-SUBS-NEW-/400355144988?pt=Car_Subwoofers_Enclosures&vxp=mtr&hash=item5d3706b51c

Would normal 6.5 subs be too deep for the rear speaker recesses?

inspiral
Hi Kris How did you get on with this ? I've been wondering the same thing as I don't want to reduce my boot space.
flamez
I've managed to fit a sealed box and 10" sub in the hole where the bose sub was, doesn't get the cabin gain boost effect from having the sub in the boot but its still decent. inspiral
Sounds interesting So did you use an off the shelf box or build a custom one ? Is the sub driver mounted where the old one was ? Any pics ? Sorry for all the questions. Thanks
