stuarty
OK, i know its a 350z forum but there's alot of really knowledeable members on here. I'm thinking about buying a Brand new BMW Z4 sdrive 20i m sport. This model comes as a Z4 sdrive 18i m sport ( from march 2013), Z4 sdrive 20i m sport, Z4 28i m sport. The dealer told me that they are all the exact same car apart from the power outputs. They all have 2.0L twin turbo engines ( twin scroll). The 20i is a detuned version of the 28i and the 18i is detuned even more. Question is could the sdrive 18i and 20i be tuned to the same power output as the 28i? I understand warrenty would be void etc, but i'm just curious. The list price difference between the 18i and 28i is around £7k, seems alot considering its only the mapping on the car thats different. They also do a sdrive 35i and 35is but cant afford one of them, lol.
Ekona
You need to check if they're the same engine number. If so, and the turbos are the same size, then I don't see why not.

Yip, all 3 have the N20B20 engine. The Z4 sdrive 20i has a 2L twin turbo, my e92 2.0i has the same engine with no turbo and both cars have the same bhp. But Z4 is quicker to 60 though. Wonder why bmw would give a 2l twin turbo and 2l na engine the same power output!

S1 HNK
I'd imagine its more than a remap. Turbos could be different, intercoolers. I thought we'd all talked you out of a Z4 anyway!?
Chris AME
the internals could be differant, with us been a ford dealer we see a lot of focus ST/RS, the engine in the focus st and rs is the same but the rs has a completly different set of internals differant intercooler and a differant turbo. yes it probably could make the extra power with a few small mods and a remap but like we have seen with the focus some of the ones over 300 bhp that have done a few thousand miles now are starting to have some problems while we have seen RS's tweeked to 350+ are still trouble free with 60k. I know its a completly differant car to the BMW but you just need to do some more research into what other differances there are

Bloody BMW dealers calling me and tempting me with cracking deals. I had a test drive today, it felt rather cramped inside. The 20i felt as if the hand break was on. I felt the car had a lot more to offer. Think i'm just going o stick with what I've got and spend £7k on a zed and keep it forever and ever! Ekona
*brake Try the 28i maybe? They certainly don't look cramped inside, was that the same with the roof down?

Probably felt cramped because i'm a big lad. Yeah 28i would be better, but when you look at the price difference i'd probably be better of with the 35i. But their serious cash! Also would you do me a favour and refrain from correcting my spelling/grammar, it's not that i cant spell, it's more down to the fact i cant be arsed. Was there any difference? And it was a joke, hence the smiley. Chill out, big fella! Although if you can't be arsed to spell correctly, then I can't be arsed to stop correcting you. I took it for a test drive, roof up. Then parked up and put the roof down, i think the main thing was that i was sitting literally over the back axle. From the drivers seat back there was not a lot of car, but loads of car in front, if you know what i mean? Unloke the zed where you sit pretty much mid car. Ekona
Yeah, they have seriously long bonnets, proper old-skool roadster fashion. Bit like a Caterham, if you will.

I'm still undecided. I'll take the wife for a look on monday, see what she thinks. Spec wise it cant touch my e92 though and i think my e92 might look better, but i would like a turbo again and a 2 seater and wouldnt mind a hardtop convertible if i'm honest!
