Cragus
Hey guys, I know there are a lot of members on here are knowledgeable in this area so thought someone might be able to give me some advice. My neighbours (a very nice retired couple) have asked me to look at their laptop for them as the screen is blank white (lighting up) and has pale blue lines going across it. I opened the lid to ensure the ribbon cable was clipped in properly and it appears to be. I connected it to an external screen and it is displaying fine. Am i to assume the laptop screen is screwed? I looked at the mother board to try and work out where the ribbon cable goes there but wasn't 100% sure. I just tried to ensure all 'clips' were secure. Any advice to save them forking out for a new computer would be great. Thanks in advance!
spursmaddave
Not sure there is much you can do with a fubar screen mate..... You could try and get a quote to repair but to be honest they are better off getting a replacement. Maybe a claim on the household insurance, sounds like accidental damage to me
JetSet
Could be the backlight, that or the screen itself has failed. Laptop repairs are very expensive (can be anything from £50 to £100 an hour, plus parts) and unless you can get a warranty repair I'd just remove anything of use from it and get another one as Dave suggests. marzman
You should be able to buy a replacement panel relatively cheaply. If you have a spare LCD monitor open it up and see if the ribbon connector is the same as the one on the laptop - if so - try it out to see if it works - is so you have confirmed that the panel is at fault and not something worse on the motherboard... Look on ebay for replacement panels or any good independent specialist should be able to source one.
DoogyRev
Sounds like the screen is fooked. They should be able to get it repaired, but depending on the age and model, it may be cheaper to buy a new laptop near enough. I had a 1330 and the screen went, cost 380 squid for a new screen. At an outside chance it could be driver related, so a restore or such like may fix it

spursmaddave
Yes definitely repairable and a new screen is about £50 but looking at the spec is it really worth it that was my point
JetSet
Would you believe that Caroline's laptop broke down today. Double picture on screen straight from bootup, attached a monitor but no picture, suspect graphics card has a fault. Off to get another laptop in the morning.
