Exhaust Back Box increased my premium by £64

I'm currently with Sheila's Wheels and I informed them of the Cobra Sports Exhaust backbox that has recently replaced the OEM one and now have to pay an additional £64.

Seems a tad excessive, could understand it it was the full exhaust, but just for a backbox / mid-pipe.

Any way safe to say that I will be moving companies when the time is right next year.

I've used Adrian Flux mainly because I wanted my NOS insured. Found them helpful and a good price.

I now use Prestige Keep Moving (forum trader) improved quote etc.

There's Sky Insurance and a couple of others. Check the insurance section for ideas.

Ring around and if you're planning further mods ask them for quoting those items too.

Both Prestige Keep Moving and Adrian Flux for me would allow me to add any exterior or interior mod for free. Anything that affects BHP is normally chargeable.

From what im lead to believe if it doesnt increase performance then it shouldnt be chargeable, and seeing as the 350 needs an Uprev remap to see any gains i cant see why they should charge. Thats what i read somewhere if its just a like for like replacement that isnt OEM becuase its to expensive and uneconomically viable then it shouldnt make a difference

At the very least get on go compare or the like and put your mods in and get a range of quotes. I used Admiral for my Zed, I added the Milltek, induction kit, HFCs, wheels and the increase was around £25 for the year. Then again I have decades of driving and age on my side...

...then they quoted us £600 for a bog standard Ford Focus, so we switched to Sheilas wheels for £290.

Depends on the insurance company really. In the past with vehicles ive had some insurance companies who will load up your premium for any non standard bits you fit - regardless of whether they actually increase or decrease the performance. Others have been more sensible and when ive explained that ive fitted an after market exhaust as it was cheaper than an OEM one and no performance increase, they have said "fine, no increase in premium".

Funny really though, as if you took a car into Kwik Fit to have a new exhaust fitted, 9 times out of 10 the exhaust they take off the shelf and fit will not be a manufacturers OEM exhaust. It will be made by any one of a dozen companies out there who make replacement parts. Same as with your tyres, brake pads, air filters etc. etc.. And I dont think anyone rings up their insurance company to inform them that they have just had a new exhaust & a set of tyres fitted down Kwik Fit.

You could look at it as £64 being a rip off. However, that's very likely to be an admin charge of £30 which just leaves £34 as the cost for the mod which is entirely reasonable IMHO. Also, other specialist insurers can often be more expensive for a stock or very lightly modded car, and you may not be any better off changing at the end of the year.

My current insurer (Sky) is more expensive than Admiral, however it's a more comprehensive policy. I think that paying the extra is worth it, as I can guarantee that with SW if you have an accident your exhaust isn't covered like-for-like and they'll replace with an OEM one again.

Interesting, Admiral told me they couldn't quote me because I have the Nismo exhaust... this was at renewal too, having insured me for the previous year with the same exhaust declared.

Glad to hear Wasso :)

Yes, please feel free to ring us at renewal time. You can find details here - http://www.350z-uk.c...surance-scheme/

A +1 for Prestige from me to. I added Meister-R coilovers to my Z recently, after speaking to prestige they added it to my policy for free, they didn't even charge an admin fee for doing it! Very impressed. As long as my renewal quote from them remains competitve next year I see no reason for me to leave.

thats probably more than it cost to buy!! :scare:

i declared exhaust (also k1) and intake on mine with admiral cost about £25 extra although that was back in april/may this year :)

To add insult to injury... that's £180 UNCOVERED in event of accident the part won't be included in valuation. What am I paying for? A strange risk profile that inadvertently doesn't work. I mean it did add 400HP and all...

I've had this issue last year whilst covered by Sainsbury. They approached exhaust changes with a secondary increase dictated by change of noise new exhaust makes over factory fitted original. I assume they would say makes car more noticeable & therefore more desirable to pinch. The relevant endorsement when it came through made specific reference to no change in engine note. For reference Cobra stainless fitted.

On the other hand, surely using that logic a noiser exhaust would make the car LESS likely to be stolen as thieves would alert the entire neighbourhood as soon as they started your car up. I know my K1 used to make a hell of a racket.

I wish I could understand them. Wheels and exhaust bumped my premium up a whole £9 with Admiral and thats with a £1180 p/a policy. I was shocked as last year I was paying literally more than double that and made an enquiry about an exhaust half way through the policy and they quoted me £50! This reminds me, I forgot to add the Popcharger! DAMMIT!
