mrchic
Hi Just gave my insurance company a call regarding a potential 350z purchase, and they said they could not cover without a tracker fitted. I don't know much about these, so any advice on price, where to get fitted. i noticed there's an insurance section on here, so may be worth going elsewhere for a quote Obviously a tracker would make sense at a later date Thanks
glrnet
Would certainly look somewhere else, as far as I recall this has not come up very often Do you live in a post code area that causes insurance companies issues? Are they offering you a substantial discount for fitting a Thatcham Approved Tracker? If not walk away.
rabbitstew
Defo shop about. Some insurance companies actually charge MORE if you have a tracker as one member on here found out. Bit like when they charge you more for parking your car in the garage rather than leave it on the street. They assume thieves may cause more damage to the car trying to by-pass the tracker. The only issue I had with insurance companies was some of the "specialised" companies who claim to offer the best prices for such cars actually were worried that I was going from a FWD Golf to a 309bhp RWD car. Some said if my previous car was something like a Subaru WRX then they`d offer me cheaper insurance. The fact I also ride a 140bhp RWD R1 motorbike and have dozens of years experience of high performance cars & motorbikes was irrelevant to them. Needless to say I avoided the specialist insurers and went straight to confused.com
T.C
Thats a real shame they say that you 'have" to have one fitted. Your money is better spent on preventing it being taken in the first place. Tracker is more an "aid to recovery" than a deterrent these days. It has it's place in the whole car crime arena, but it's not where your money should be spent. My wife and I have between us 35 years in the police, despite a heavily reduced cost to us at having tracker fitted, I never met one police officer who had one fitted to their car. HaydnH
I have a tracker on mine, the savings on insurance doesn't match the anual cost of the tracking service so don't think it will pay for itself. I only keep mine up as the cars worth more to me than the insurance would probably pay out.

I.e. what it would cost you to go and find an identical car. Personally if someone nicked my car im not sure id actually want it back afterwards, esp not knowing what damage they have caused to the engine etc... rtbiscuit
its actually extremely had to damamge an engine from driving. espcially as a few trips from a crim wouldn't do it. any engine damage would be from carless owner.

Depends on what they do. My missus hit another car in hers, then carried on driving not realising all the coolant had fell out. Result was engine cooked itself and headgasket went. Ive seen "police stop" on tv, and those car theives only tend to stop after the car is physically unable to carry on!
4RE Leather
It is becoming more of a demand rather than advice from Insurance companies now days. My neighbours boy not only had to have one fitted but they insisted that they were going to to install it! Not quite sure what went on but he got a reminder about safe driving and keeping to the speed limit from his Insurance company! Breed into that what you can . Insurance replacement cars have them fitted and I know the one i used has the full software so they could see where there car and what speed it was going at all times? I have the latest Cobra Tracker Plus fitted and can go online at ant time and see where the car is/where its been and more importantly "Where the swine is who stole it". You dont have to have the software that comes with it as it is £185 a year. But it does mean that where ever you park it you can set a zone up round the car with your phone. Then if the car moves either by having the engine started or wires cut to be pushed onto a truck, you will get a text message within 20 seconds. However as one member has stated the cost per year is 4 times more having one in my case than not. Google the one I have and see for yourself. It is quite fun when you take the car into a workshop and you ring them to say why is my car at such and such and not where it should be:) Edited December 11, 2012 by 4RE Leather
rtbiscuit
the ones for young drivers are slightly different, they monitor driving behaviour and are becoming more popular becuase they offer greater savings over policy's without. a few of my 6th formers have them, and it knows if they are speeding, how much they drive at night, how much they drive etc, and it helps them analysis the insurance for next year. so if they are good its alot less and if they are a liability it goes up. it also mean sif they have an accident the inusrance company have a better idea of whos at fault etc. give it a few more years and cameras in the front will be alot more common. D8NMT
It's worth asking if it needs to be a specific brand etc or if it can be something you install yourself, they might just need to tick a box. I have a tracker on mine, it's one of the gps/gsm ones you can get online. You put a pay as you go sim card in it and you can text it (or call it) at any time and it will text you back with the location on a map. Its about the size of a box of matches and just needs 12v power. (mine is hard wired in and hidden). So thats a cheap option. Hope this helps **mod edit** Some text deleted. D8NMT
Yep it's not bad. The nice thing is that if you change cars you can just unplug it and transfer to your new vehicle! In fact, I unplug mine and put it in my bag when I go on holiday just in case it gets lost (the charge lasts around 5-7 days). So lots of different uses! If you need any more info just let me know mate Some more info here: http://tracker.moonfruit.com/ Edited December 11, 2012 by D8NMT
Allan Zada
i would definitely shop about. I got my insurance through Admiral as they were the cheapest. When i asked about fitting a cobra tracker they told me the premium would go up nearly 10% as cars that tent to have them fitted are more likely to be stolen in the first place.
4RE Leather
Those little white ones that are on ebay and the seller lives in france is a ferking crook. He hickes the prices up and then cuts off the sim if you dont use a min amout of positions a month. Your tracker may need to be thatcham approved as that is the benchmark that the insurance industry seems to go by. Whe you click the drop down box on tracker fitted, there is a list of approved devices. Every single one on AXA and Swift is a Thatcham approved recognised make. My cobra tracker plus was so new at the time i had to get it put on their list. We all know after my recent posts that the CCTV in my case was well worth it. Some **** hit my side and denied even being in the area at the time. I issued a summonds and printed his insurances no quibble cheque on this site:) You will be fine:)

Typical bullcrap from the insurance companies. If I fit one to my Renault Clio that means it's more likely to be stolen... . Seriously, as long as you don't advertise to the public that you have a tracker how on earth would a thief know. I bet though that if you had an upmarket car that had a tracker system as standard (don't know if such a car exists) and you removed the tracker that they wouldn't knock 10% off the insurance . Pete.
