spursmaddave
04 with just under 175K on the clock It is all about how it has been looked after. That's incredible!! Not really. My v6 Alfa did 250K and my 04 GT is on 132K at the moment. V6 engines live for ever if you look after them and spend your time cruising up and down motorways. Oh, and you have looked at the odometer in most taxis? Its a complete myth that engines have to be bought with low mileage, but that worry over mileage makes it better for us buyers who pick up a bargain car Engines are about the most solid thing in a car. The fact that you may have spent 3 grand on 4 clutches over that period of time along with all the other items that do wear out is something else! Yeah but any car would have worn out a few clutches over 250k I have seen a few taxi odometers but would you really want to drive a p reg sierra with 700k on the clock
Ricey
I know but my point being its all well and good buying a car with 100k because the engine is sound but dont expect it to be large cost free (well comparativly.....spending a grand on a new clutch is a lot to me

I fully get your point about clutches not being cheap, but they're consumables, and a car will go through several clutches in its lifetime, so buying a 100k car doesn't really put you at much more risk of clutch failure than buying a 50k car. However old the car is the clutch will go at some point. Same deal with tyres, at around £800 a set for something decent it isn't cheap, but it also isn't at all dependant on the mileage of the car. A zed is going to be expensive to run however old it is, so I don't think people should be terrified of something with 80k on it in case it explodes 5 miles down the road because so far it seems that all the non-consumable parts are pretty sturdy. Ricey
Ffs! Ok so a clutch is a bad example my point being that a car with 100k nonwithstanding the 'bullet proof' engine has other parts that are going to be worn after 100k.....if your buying on a budget and looming at high milers just to be wary of this fact. There are bushes, arms, bearings, gearboxes, clutches, hoses and other assorted crap that arre not going to last forever (like the engine can) and can still mount up to a whole sack of cash. Darren-B
can still mount up to a whole sack of cash. phrase of the week I completely agree with what Ricey is saying. It`s ok buying a cheap car with milage but to keep it sweet there are parts that are going to need replacing, especially with something like the Zed, it`s not a mondeo & most people buy them for a bit of performance. My dad has an Audi A8, hes had it since it was 9months old & 9years on it`s still going strong, still on it`s original battery, starts 1st time every time & drives like it did 9 years ago. Coming close to 200k it`s cost him his fair share in the regular consumables, brakes, tyres, oil, filters & plugs. I`ve maintained & serviced the car throughout it`s life, including 2 cambelts even the second time around it took me a whole weekend. But recently I`v had to change an exhaust manifold ( absolute pig, far worse than the zed) drive shaft & starter motor. The front end bushes need doing now. With the car realistically now only worth about £1500 it`s hardly worth the hassle.
