Put a couple of hours into the roll cage tonight - still lots to do but what better way to learn than to do it :)

So I set my daughter up on the welder and away she went

Not bad for her second ever attempt

bit of cleaning up with the grinder

starting to get there

bit more effort and it's nearly ready for primer

reminds me of my old mini project seeing buster on the back set i had a 2 seat conversion where the roof was chopped off and the front section was removed too you then sat on the back seat to drive was a good laugh but not safe in a crash or pratical, in fact i may have a full set of spax suspension still in my garage of parts somewhere if i have i will dig it out and you can have it.

Today I tried something a bit different and a bit more challenging :scare:

Starting with a standard rear quarter panel -

DSCF2615.jpg

and attack with an angle grinder :)

DSCF2616.jpg

repair with a welder

DSCF2617.jpg

and repeat

DSCF2618.jpg

I was having some problems but I found a tip on one of the Mini forums to get good penetration (oooooo errr  ) and a stronger weld, it works as well :)

DSCF2620.jpg

also it helps to tap it "in" while it is still hot from the welding

this means less grinding and more weld left

DSCF2621.jpg

and just for fun I stuck a bit of filler in to get a feel for the finished product

DSCF2622.jpg

DSCF2623.jpg

think I can make it work

only 3 more to go :bangin:

Stay tuned for the next exciting episode .................

Looking good.

Wanted to do this to mine nearly 30 years ago but my Mum wouldn't let me. ( Shared car ) Apparently by this stage of modding I had already " ruined it and made it unsaleable, of dubious legality and an embarrassment to be seen in":lol: If only I'd had a dad like you!!

Suppp ???

Would have updated sooner but it's been the same thing so here is the short version :)

Onto seam No2

DSCF2624.jpg

Hey Presto

DSCF2625.jpg

Moving onto seam No3 Passenger side A pillar

DSCF2627.jpg

DSCF2628.jpg

I'll do the wing later as I can run a weld up the inside first to make it easier :)

......... Then onto Seam No4 Drivers side A pillar, I think my welding is getting better (or the metal was thicker  )

DSCF2629.jpg

Now before I could crack on I wasn't happy with the A panel the last owner had fitted -

DSCF2630.jpg

To far back and ..........

DSCF2631.jpg

too high its supposed to meet the sill!

So that came off

DSCF2632.jpg

and went back on a bit lower

DSCF2633.jpg

of course I did the seam as well when I welded it back on :)

Stay tuned for the next exciting episode ........................

Seams like your getting the hang of this welding malarky

Great job as ever B)

O very good

Looking good Keyser  Does the roof seam/gutter stay?

Yes mate - I do like the smooth look but the general opinion is the doors will leak if removed so going to keep it (for now at least)

Nice work Chris, Hope you have shares in grinder wheels, I know your quick @ changing them ;) Used that secret technique last week

Funny you should say that just went and got some more

Two Things on the secret technique -

1. It's only really cool if someone who dosn't know it is watching ;)

2. Never have anyone watching when you get it wrong cause you look like a tit and it hurts
