Sarnie Posted August 20, 2012 Share Posted August 20, 2012 have to agree with sarnie on this, if its only a weekend toy i'd be looking in the TVR cupboard; if i had the cash spare for a toy i'd want it to be something that makes me smile when i go for a blast. the M3 and the cayman are great daily's but for a weekend toy i;d want more. like tvr as we all know something is bound to happen. You don't know this, it's an unknown variable. The Mrs has has an Alfa Romeo for the last two years, and guess what? It hasn't gone up in flames, or broken down once, contrary to popular opinion Your choices are faaaaaar too safe for a weekend car. As biscuit says, the cars your looking at are great for doing 12-15k per year in. If your going to be doing a few K a year then get something special, or just keep the zed and buy an Akpro exhaust etc which you can sell on rather than loosing it on a Cayman/M3. Don't forget on cars of this price, buying from a dealer your going to be paying about £2k in profit. Your £28k from a dealer is only actually worth about £26k. Once you start driving the car and adding the mileage, in 12 months you'll be getting trade bids of less that £20k, irrespective of the mileage. The rarity of 350z's/370z's have kept their residuals fairly strong but as Cayman's and M3's are ten a penny, your going to take a huge hit imo. But what people think of me because of what I drive doesnt really bother me if am honest. Come on we drive nissan's lol people see that as a poor mans tt I will let you guys know how I get on with the cayman s tomoz. Just because someone offered you good money for your car, does not mean you have to take them up on it. Are you not enjoying the 370? I agree with the above that for just weekend fun, the Caymen, and more so the Beemer will bore you before long. For a 28k weekend toy, there are many possibilities I think a Cobra would be near the top of my list I see Nobles are coming down in to that price range, you can also pick up some nice Fezza 348's and 308's for that money. I know TVRs do get a bad rep regarding their reliability but lets face it, they aren't great. A good friend of mine worked in a TVR dealership years ago and said it was just ridiculous how many would come back with faults on the back of AA trucks. But for that v8 sound its got to be worth it. It just looks like a 335, even the front on the standard m3 you've shown aside from the wheels looks dull. Cayman looks much better and they seem to handle well on track too. A 2006 will be in budget, it's 4wd and has back seats that a baby can fit in so it's practical. It's a head turner. Ticks every box !! I wouldnt say I am worrying Dave.. but I am going to pay alot more for a 911 and then have the usual outlays. Are you thinking residual value, running costs etc then possibly not the right move Are you thinking once in a lifetime opportunity to own a special car before you are too old and crusty to properly enoy it.... then stuff the expense and go for it, you can't take it with you! Yeh mate, I am not worried too much about residual value, as I will only have the car for about 2 years... running costs in caymans wont be that diffo compared to the 370z. Picked up the cayman this morning and I fell in love with its looks, however I must remember this is not the car I would be gettin as this one is newer and has some nice toys One thing I noticed straight away is how refined the cayman is through the gears.. it does it with so much ease whether the 370z is just a big brut.
