Fitting Tomtom advice please.

I have an outdated Birdview 5.1 system and there are no update versions available. So i have decided to fit a Tomtom sat nav instead. My intention is to remove the the original screen and wire it to the existing cigarette socket in the passenger footwell via a second socket.

Not being an electrician can someone answer me a couple of questions.

1. Can i just splice the original wiring to the new socket? and run two sockets off the one feed?

2. If so, would there be any sort of power drain from the Tomtom when the Tomtom and ignition are switched off?

I think i may have found my answer.

 

Splicing. Two options. The socket in the fascia has two wires running to it. You need to attach two new wires to these and then to the new socket. Make sure you get the polarity correct! If you have any doubt about this then get someone who knows what they are doing to do it for you.

 

1. Cut the existing cable in two, strip, tin and solder then heatshrink to insulate each cable.

 

or

 

2. One of those blue crimpy cable joining thingys from Halfords. (sorry, don't know what they are called.).

 

I always solder my connections 1 but if you can't solder then option 2.

The crimps are only 3amp rated. Do you know how much current the tomtom charger takes? If more then these are not suitable.

They are called Scothloks and are the invention of the poor connection devil, solder and heat shrink if you can

I can't imagine the Tom Tom taking 3 amps. I'd still go for soldering and heatshrink. Better job all round and less resistance compared to crimping. But the crimps will do the job, just bulkier.

Nothing like 3A, check the label on the back of the unit for current clues, Agree with Jim option 1 if you can
