tez162003
Kicking myself.... Can anyone notice something about the calipers that means I cannot fit them too my car? I have spent a while fixing them up and never once noticed, I have so many times I had thought about it but didn't totally click.
sparky370z
is it the pipework fouling on the inside of the alloy? or the connection for the brake hose?
Wasso
Bracket too big??
tez162003
Nope, the pipework will be fine i'm sure, i have 19s after all and they're only 355mm discs. Sort of has something to do with that brake hose connector.
tez162003
I've not actually tested the bracket yet. They are 350z brembo adapters so they should be fine. I'll wait for one more guess then i'll say

sparky370z
lines too short? location of the connection on the caliper?
Wasso
Here's standard Brembo's to compare with...
tez162003
Nope. So after many moments thinking about which piston goes where when fitted to the car (i.e. does the brake disc rotate onto the small or big piston first) i actually even said to myself oh wait doesn't matter, they don't look handed... Only late last night after I finished I went FU*K! I have 2 calipers for the same side of the car! The brakes are meant to be handed. I was thinking I dont really want to give this caliper back in return for the correct side in tatty condition, so rung the guy not knowing what the hell to do. He said it was his fault and is willing to just give me another caliper for the correct side and has no use for the one i painted. So a bit more paint and another Brembo sticker required, then swap the new bolts and pipe etc over (I will make sure my spare is as good as the other two, i will get the spare parts when I am near the shops, no rush there) After which I will have a rather elaborate paper weight... sparky370z
i didnt even know that they had different size pistons for the rotation of the disc. learn something new everyday!!
Wasso
i didnt even know that they had different size pistons for the rotation of the disc. learn something new everyday!! Odd as the standard pistons on mine look the same size? Also your calipers don't look like they are from the same side?? The nipple is at the other end of the caliper just like oem Brembo?? tez162003
That's the thing. I even had to think which side to fit the bleed nipples on, so i was looking at the pistons trying to work it all out OEM brakes have different sized pistons too, you can see from the picture above. The piston on the right that you can see in that picture above is bigger than the left. The disc should if I am right in saying should rotate onto the small piston first. I'm getting another caliper so its not a problem, in fact I will have a whole spare caliper now, but I am just kicking myself for not noticing before. tez162003
So I went and got caliper no:3 just to realise when i got back that one of the bleed nipples was cross threaded. So back I go and got another one. Stripped it down, split it, wire wheel and sanded it, and is now ready for painting. Also got my disc bells back from the powder coater's. So i can now re build these. I was trying to find new set bolts for these, but they are hard to find for some reason. So I have sat and wire wheeled and polish wheeled all the bolt heads. I then realised I had only done 23 bolts and not 24 that there should be. I lost one... Hunted around the workshop for a good hour as I have a tenancy to just put things down in silly places. Admitted defeat and went home to find that one bolt sat next to the calipers... Not impressed. So, just the one caliper to refurbish now, new bolts bought, bleed nipples and copper lines I'll grab this lunch time. Then just clean up yet another brake hose, bracket etc. then I am there. tez162003
So these brakes have been a nightmare. Since the last post, I fit them, tried bleeding them, got it good enough to drive, went round the block and upon arriving back the passenger side was billowing out smoke, one of the pistons was sticking. So I decided to do things properly. - All 4 brakes off - Completely striped, seals, bolts everything. - Sand blasted - Powder coated - Rebuilt with new fluid and dust seals, new bleed nipples etc etc Thought I'd get my spacers powder coated while i was at it. £30 for all the spacers and calipers to be powdered Fit them onto the car, bled them again. Pumped the brake a few times to pressurize the system, and some of the bleed nipples were leaking out the threads. Tightened them, still leaked, tightened a little more and one went pop. F**K! Luckily it was the caliper I had a spare of. Few talks with the experts has made me think it is the new bleed nipples. the OE ones are tapered with a slight flat bottom, the new ones were slightly longer, tapered with a flat bottom and a very very small nib on the end. I have swapped the bleed nipples back over to the old ones. Just need to try bleeding the system again. Hopefully this works, otherwise I may just give up. How did you manage to find them? Wouldn't mind trying something similar this winter to keep me doing something useful at the kitchen table
Daryl
Amazing effort and patience, and im sure once they are all working as they should you will think it was worth it. Certainly look good on the car with the black wheels.
