Vik do not get a pug......or anything French apart from maybe a Citroen! Utter shite.

The new focus has a Peugeot engine in it......my ford specialist mech said he can guarantee that none will see passed 70k without major problems or catastrophic engine failure.

Maybe its only new Peugeots then or Peugeot petrols which are dodgy? Our 2003 307HDI now has 120k on it and still going strong, cost me less to maintain than my VW Golf did - £10 in 40k miles isnt bad at all for parts. Prior to that we had a Peugeot 106 1.5 Diesel which I had from 80k up to 170k and engine was still going strong. My brother has a 1998 Peugeot 306 D Turbo which hes had from 50k, now its showing 120k on it, still going strong. My ex gf has a 2000 306 HDI which she has done about 40k on, now at 120k without any problems.... and so on.

New pugs in fairness I think mate......he was talking about the new focus anyway

A little bit left field but what about a Puma? Supposed to be a good drive, I think the Racing version will be more than 4K but you'll have the choice of the best examples otherwise....

Racing puma is an exceptional shout.

Great cars and cheap to run.

Any Puma, just check for rusty rear arches and just change the bushes as they wear out!

hi vik

What's your mileage? I've sold the Zed last august and since I had a 200bhp Fabia TDI with 304 lb/ft (came with a bigger hybrid turbo, plenty around) good fun, quick, returning 50mpg no matter how you driving but, no toys and doesn't feel special. Sold the Fabia after 6 moths and got a 159 JTS which I sold yesterday, nice car, nice interior but returning 24mpg in town and 30 on a motorway at no more than 70mph!!!! Now looking into 330d ( 6to 8K for an 04with 80K miles  ) or at an alfa GT diesel. I only use the car at week ends and do 10K miles per year mainly short trip but it seems like that if you want some torque and the mpg, TDI is the only way

How short? You will kill these engines if they don't get to temp constantly. Also you have to compare the running costs of the extra of if a turbo brakes and extra premium a diesel commands over the "gained" mpg of a petrol.

avg 20 round trip and I agree that it is not healthy

how about a cupra r mk1? A bit chavvy but can return 30 if you're sensible with it and goes when you want to have fun

If you want a "nummed" drive or a mile muncher they are great. I think they are a little dull and soulless but that's not always bad and they have their fans.

yeah am starting to swing towards TDis - although my mileage of around 15-18k a year really doesn't warrant a diesel - its the short term savings that will have biggest impact at the moment I suppose

Go diesel. At least you'll have a bit of torque like you're used to... just without the speed!

I highly recommend the VAG PD diesels. They do sound a bit agricultural but they go like they smell. We had the 150bhp version in our Golf and it had plenty of performance and never returned less than 42mpg.

PD engines are very good, strong, easily tuned, "quick" but run out out puff straight away. Diesel straight siox would be the better choice but I suspect it might be out of budget. Hoping to try the JTD engines soon

The 330d is decent of fuel, tuneable and sounds ok. I wouldnt buy a petrol alfa never mind a diesel one.

Took a diesel SAAB out today - got to say for the money was a nice bit of kit - leather, dual climate control heated windscreen serious lag in 1st though  but didn't take any pushing further up the range - can I really get into a saloon though? I have sensible hat on now.

Sat in a few others - hated Focus even in Titanium trim... the C30 was a let down and Volvo seems to think they can command BMW prices...its no good am going to have to at least go and see that PUG 407 coupe

Mine didn't run out off puff quickly at all, I was surprised by the breadth of the rev range for a tdi tbh. It was the gt tdi 150 and I was genuinely impressed with it - to the extent that I wondered if it had been remapped by a previous owner.

Saab 9-3s are nice especially the aero if u don't need economy

If u do go saloon it opens up ur options a lot more

If u stick to coupe please don't get a pug! It might be good value but u might spew a little everytime u look at it!

Id be looking BMW 320 m sport in that price range or how about a celica? Looks good- better than the pug anyway  , nice cabin, decent drive and won't be a fortune to run

If you like the style, I would recommend an Alfa GT, went for a test drive today and was pleasantly surprised. a simple map should make things even better

Hated the driving position in the GT - I tired it three years ago just before I got the zed :)
