Porsche 997 Turbo

Okay so a mate of mine just brought a 2006 997 Turbo (manual transmission).

It only has an exhaust and a map on it and is pushing (we reckon) above 550bhp.

What an amazing car in every single way, other then it doesn't sound as good as my zed and has that pointless clock in the middle?!! :p - Great traction, great looks, reliable, well built. There is very little to dislike about this car.

I have not driven or been driven in a car with so much power that has so little lag. R35 is similar, but I think even that has a little more lag...? - It's almost as responsive as my s/c zed, but defo has much more power!

Fantastic car, one to keep an eye on me thinks...? :)

P.S. I think he's planning to tune this to 750bhp with stock internals. That will be epic! B)

I thought I did as well until I sat in this car.

Didn't want to drive it because it was raining at the time...

For me, it would come down to whether I wanted a manual or auto car. With porsche, you have the option.

And also, another mates warranty claim for his THIRD GT-R gearbox is still pending... which has put me off a little as well (his car is fairly stock... and no, he hasn't been launching it at every traffic light.)

You have three options on the 997: Manual, auto or PDK. :)

Never been in an FI 911, I do keep looking at 996 GT2s though. Would love a 997 version. But they're out of my price range and I think there's only 1 UK car with the PCM3, which I'd consider a must-have on a 997.

We do tune's and track prep for Porsche 997T's  We recently did a customers car to 650bhp and it was a flying machine. Make sure you check the condition of the rads before doing any big tuning though as they are a well know failure item. Take a look at 'Falcon Performance' on facebook and under Porsche Pics there should be a few getting new rads in. I think we have done around 10-12 cars in the last year with the same issues.

A great car and I really want a gen2 one at the moment in baby blue

Yeah that's the colour my friend has. Best colour for that car by far.

Only issue for the gen 2 I'm told is that you cannot push the pdk box past 600bhp due to its shaft design? - There's currently no solution for it at the moment?

How do you think it compares to the R35 GTR Lee?

Correct, and it's driving the tuning guys in the US nuts!

It's more the torque than the power though, as that's what kills gearboxes. I don't think the PDK is a weak 'box, it's the electronic controls that are getting in a faff and reigning the output in. Anyone can engineer a stronger shaft, but decoding specialist gearbox electrics is a little more specialised. It will happen eventually, but probably on the 991 rather than the 997.

Yup, X51 is the powerpack, gives it the same power as a Turbo S. £25K for one of those is an utter bargain of a car.

They're not too bad to work on, it's when you start having issues with coolant pipes it can get a bit pricey as it's an engine out job. Most other stuff can be gotten at just by removing the rear bumper and exhaust bits.

My other mate has an 650bhp+ 996 turbo as well. It's an utter beast!!!

The 997 really is an evolution to his car though. We're all mates and have tested the cars over. Can't complain that Porsche only just modernised the new car, they've changed many other things. The traction control systems, and lots of other things I don't understand! lol

Not sure how you drove it. The ride on the 997 is much more compliant, and the handling is much better, the turbo's are much more responsive, not to mention it's looks...

Both pretty much flat out, the 7 felt nervous and a little detached from the road where the 6 felt like I was invincible (125 mph off the M11 - A11 if anyone knows it), this is comparing a C2S 997 with a C4S 996, it may have been alignment or something but I really didnt feel comfortable caning it. I also prefer 996 interiors but I think Im alone on that one ;)

996 and 997.1 turbos share the same engine, the Mezger unit. Both as strong as houses, albeit with slight differences but essentially it's the same engine.

The 997.2 runs a DFI engine which is a completely different design.
