Stew
Use trip tronic its even more fun! I used tiptronic on my dads S Class for about 3 mins and realised it was more bother than it was worth! Flicked back to manual and I've never touched the buttons on the back of the wheel again!

Was a B road but wasn't feeling it in the S boat. In a smaller one it'd be better as I have hustled them before.

Wasso
Broke again.......yaaaaaay Same problem.....gearbox foooooked. Waiting for the AA man Paul I feel for you mate, you're not getting the best of luck with that merc, and it's even got four pages all to itself so far. I'd burn it and claim the insurance, not that I'd do that of course
Ricey
I think get it fixed and sling it in for another car. Im thinking 7 series 4.4 v8 ......same price, more kit, faster. Bimmer don't really do it for me but they just do everything right.

Bimmer don't really do it for me but they just do everything right. those 7 series are apparently plagued with problems. do your research and double check them. if you want german V8 i would possibly be looking at the Audi A8 4.2 Quattro. kit level is insane. 4wd for thr snow in winter. and audi build quality. if i needed more back seat space over the jag, this is what i;d be checking out. Ricey
Watching an FTO as a cheap run around on eBay at the mo! Some one also mentioned a jag s type r but think its a bit too 'trad jag' for me Maybe the merc will get fixed but I'll never be able to trust it again in honesty......runs perfect then boom! Audi suck. They cant do better than 3series a4 level. Which 7series an e60 or e38? The 4.4 v8 is a great engine. Whats wrong with it this time? Exact same thing or something else? Ekona
Whatever you buy, at that price point from what they were you're always taking a massive risk, but you knew that before you got in. Sometimes it pays off (for the most part, I'd say Rich has been very lucky with his XKR), and sometimes it doesn't. It's at what point you quit and just accept that throwing money/time at it isn't reaping any rewards. Stick with it Ricey. Go back and read your posts when you first got it, and remember how excited you were. Remember how good it can be, and that this is just a blip in the road. It's an awesome car, it would be a shame to see you move on from it so soon.
Ricey
Aye I suppose Dan. It's just both times its been fixed now it's driven perfectly without a hint of a problem and then its just gone completely. If the whole box isn't changed out I'm not sure i'll be able to trust it on antthing over a 10 mile journey!
Ekona
I'd say you've got three choices: 1. Take it back to your guy and let him have another go at fixing it. 2. Take it somewhere else and let them have a crack. 3. Get a new 'box installed. How much is a new one? It might be worth considering, but you've still no guarantees that it'll be 100%. I think I'd consider option 2, or at least find out who is considered to be one of the experts in Merc 'boxes in the country. You might pay a bit more for their expertise, but that's gotta be better than constantly worryiing about where it'll break down next. I feel your pain mate, truly I do. I went through the exact same thing with mine, and it took me a good 6 months to get over any worry about it breaking down again. I'm glad I stuck with it though. rtbiscuit
i'm getting to a point where i'm going to need to sink possibly the value of the car back in to the jag or half the value of the car depending on which route i take. so its not an easy run. but i must admit i've not had many problems, just lots of little fix its. as for merc box specialist http://www.auto-transmissions.co.uk/ the jag box is a merc box and these guys know there stuff. especially if its merc based. when i was down there, they had about 10 mercs in for work,

Okay, so I jinxed you after using you as my example then So what's the issue with yours then? not been jinxed they've been there since i bought it; just been putting it off. anyways the costs as they stand for the future: - change the timing chain tensioners = £1000 - de rust and paint the underside of the car = £150 - sort the rust in the sills and around the rear arches = £1500-£3000 depending on how i do it. but as half the car needs spraying as there are no panel lines to blend too the urge is to spray the whole car which could bring the grand total up to about £5000 - repair the drivers seat = £200 - possibly put new coils in all 8 cyclinders £150 - change brake pipes to the rear = £100 - new poly bushes all round = £500-£1000 (some need doing, but if i'm doing some i might as well do them all. ) - refurb the alloys =£400 then there is the new shiney stuff i want to add mina gallery may end up owning my wallet as will paragon design planned new rear when i sought the rear rust planned new sides when i sought the rear arches and sills and if i'm doing the sides and rear i might as well do the front but with black grilles and mina gallery http://www.minagallery.com/jagxp/Xk8mainoptionpage.htm but i'm excited about spending the money as A it increase the value of the XKR because good quality ones with all the work done go for alot more. and i'm enjoying restoring the car. Ricey
What is wrong with the box? Is it not the TC that needs changing rather than the box? More likely than not. Im still convinced its something electrical because of the speed it goes from fine to broken
