Ricey
......the sweet just ain't as sweet. Merc back from garage today with an £850 bill to sort the little judder that it had under low rpm acceleration......basically rad had failed and contaminated auto box with glycol. 3 days being told wrong rad arrived blahblahblah. Eventually pick it up and he advises that he's installed the wrong rad to get me on my way but to come back tomorrow/thurs as the correct one will be in (only difference he reckons was a pipe at the top that's blanked on the right one that isn't on this one and he's put a temp blank on). Drive car home......perfect. Smooth as silk and pulling like a train. No juddering, no slipping just perfect Get home and then drive to footy.....2 miles down the road it starts slipping and then slips completely (like you would imagine if a clutch totally failed on a manual). then it started whining (which went after a couple of restarts). Stop and started car and it was pulling again but no changing gear.......then going back to slipping again. Christ knows what they've done but I don't understand how a gearbox can be perfect then 2 miles later slipping and stuck in first. Also when clutches go they dont suddenly spring back to life when you restart the car. Paralysed with fear is about the best way I can describe myself now. Ricey
I want a car with more than 2 seats for a bit as well.......sick of having to drive both cars to take more than 2 people anywhere! Never mind.....one of those learning experiences at the end of the day. Expensive one but thats life. Hopefully either the garage is covering the cost for damaging the gearbox after bodging the rad or its a cheap fix. He's getting some @*!# tomorrow if he's not planning on doing it for free! Good luck mate This wasn't when you plant it mate - it was running perfect for 15 miles then literally slipped like the clutch was gone completely - no power at all.....planting it or not. Already checking out the other options

Ricey
Actually something as occurred to me that makes a lot more sense.......it might not be slipping - its jumping into neutral. That would explain why it went from perfect to nothing...clutches simply don't go fail in 20 seconds from perfect to total slippage.
Dblock
its not a clutch. its a torque convertor Which valves are they replacing?
Ricey
Oh someone mentioned something about clutch plates? I don't get gearboxes. Merc forum just asked the same question! I don't know.....just got a garbled voicemail message about it needing 2 new valves.
rtbiscuit
actually there are clutches in an auto box, about 5 or 6 of them actually
Dblock
actually there are clutches in an auto box, about 5 or 6 of them actually Its not really a friction plate like a manual car though I know there is though. Usually the TC is effected but the glycol issue and is the cause of alot of failures.
Ricey
Bizarre.......just had a call from the garage. Bloke has now said he's had a think about what I said and come to the conclusion that he can't charge me any more to fix the car. He's got onto the company that told him the rad would be ok to temporarily fit and said they need to foot the bill.......apparently its being looked into by a gearbox specialist. Sounds like the valves mustn't have fixed it then!
