Possible bargain or avoid like the plague?

The car looks like a steal at this price/age/mileage but I'm a bit worried re the Cat D and the number of owners. After a long conversation with the guy he seems genuine enough and insists there was nothing of a mechanical concern to the repairs. Unfortunately I live in central Scotland so I can't really go to see the car prior to picking it up/buying. Any advice would be appreciated!

I'll post the link and hope someone won't steal her away from me.

Depends how cheap it is really, and yes a link would help. CAT Ds can range from properly silly cosmetic damage to actually pretty serious stuff. One way to get a better idea of how much damage was done is to find out when the car was written off and use that to estimate the market value of the car at that time. The insurance company will have estimated the reparis to cost more than that value, which could be an indicator of how bad it was.

Post a link up and people will be able to give you a better opinion; I dont think anyone is going to nick it off you, most of us already have one (Or two in the case of Keyser)

Help if I post the link doesn't it!

The car is in Southport.

First impression is that it isn't that cheap considering it's a CAT D, that's probably only £1500 cheaper than a regular 2006.

Also it looks like it had front end damage to me, as it's a 2006 facelift car, but it appears to have a pre '06 non-facelift front bumper.

Have you got a reg and some pics of the car? If you have PM me them and I may know the car and may have some accident pics.

There was a forum members car not so long ago in black that has been repaired.

If a car is repaired properly then there should be no issues. I would arrange for a garage to carry out a full inspection close to where the owner lives prior to purchase, but you should ok this with the owner first and if he agrees it may be that there is nothing to hide

You cannot get a Azure 2006 GT with that low mileage for £8k!

£11k

Very overpriced but £14k

Black £8.5k but 81k miles

Its a bargain 'IF' it was repaired properly :)

This guy is a bit shady.

Whilst surfing ebay a few weeks ago I clicked on this car as the pics looked nice. First thing I noticed was the MY03 front bumper so I mailed him about it as at the time there was NO mention of ANY damage to the car.

Here is the convo I had with him (start at the bottom);

"That would obviously make sense, what i mean is that it hasnt had any reason to be replaced that i know of...

Dear tjwkawasaki,

Toby,

Being objective, the primary reason for replacing a bumper would be if it had been damaged.................

Dear tjwkawasaki,

Hi,

Nice car, just wanted to know why your car doesn't have the original bumper on it?

Cheers

So, he has either only just found out after me pointing it out to him or was trying to hide it :nono:

It's entirely possibe that the guy didn't know it was a Cat-D because they don't appear on the reg doc.

It looks nice but I wouldn't pay the AA £300 for the inspection  Get the guys postcode and ask on here if anyone can recommend a specialist garage that deal with 350's

I dont know that car i'm afraid but if it's cheap enough and you get the thumbs up from an inspection then crack on

We have a member in Southport. :)

We do? Who? :D

There's no way I'm paying the RAC £300 so I may try a local garage.

The guy was totally up front about the damage and insists he did not know when buying the car himself. I'm usually good at spotting liars and talking to the guy on the phone he "seemed" genuine enough.

Excuse my ignorance but what is the difference between the old and facelift, maybe I'm blind but I don't see any??

Hmm, so haggle him down a bit? What kind of price would you be willing to pay for that one?

EDIT: I'm also looking at this one, not 100% sure on the rear tho...

That is a ridiculous price for a 2002 import! Even if it is mint and well maintained. No leather either but it does have brembos so whoever has had it has possibly looked after it and spent time thinking about improvements

I wouldnt say ridiculous, its only got 30K on it, FSH and is clearly mint - you could probably talk him down to £6K, I dont think thats bad at all. Cloth seats wear a lot better than leather as well :)

docwra, I don't think that price is sil;ly for a mint 33k mile car really  Condition has a massive effect on the price

JaredNomac, are you going to look at it then mate??

The Cat D? The guy is spoke to at the garage is going to give her a good looking over for me and provided he gives it the ok, I'll be going for it.

If this helps I bought a cat d 07 with 9000 miles it was a 313 full gt with sat nav for £7500 repaird.

I have no major regrets as the car had a really good repair, but even though everything can look ok by eye I am at the moment having problems with the wheel allignment, nothing seems bent 3 garages including my dad can't find what's bent the car is out on the os rear toe by about 5mm. So all I can say is keep a reserve when buying a cat d and an even larger reserve for a cat c as these are sports cars and unnoticeable things like the geometry can be a big difference. It's cost me a good £350 to fix so far. Still makes the car a bargain but dnt expect no issues.
