Maybe disturbing it brought the problem to fruition! Its only a switch, it could probably be cleaned up and soaked in contact cleaner and it'll be fine again. The mechanic took a picture for me. Yeah, it just looked worse for wear. Slightly rusty and in poor condition, it is just because it had been hit by wet weather over time probably (I do live in Scotland). I didn't once get the bonnet alarm up while I was driving so it may only become monitored by the ECU when alarm is activated. It hasn't went off once since, happy days.
