He >>says: "they're in jail to pay a debt to society not to build muscles so > >>theycan assault innocent people when they leave." >> >>* He started chain gangs to use the inmates to do free work on >>county and city projects and save taxpayer's money. >> >>* Then he started chain gangs for women so he wouldn't get sued >>for discrimination. >> >>* He took away cable TV until he found out there was a federal >>court order that required cable TV for jails. When asked by a reporter if he had any lecture > >>series by a Democrat, he replied that a democratic lecture series that >>actually tells the truth for a change would be welcome and that >>it might even explain why 95% of the inmates were in his jails in the >>firstplace. >> >> * With temperatures being even hotter than usual in Phoenix (116 >>degrees just set a new record for June 2nd), the Associated Press >>reports: About 2,000 inmates living in a barbed- wire-surrounded tent >>encampment at the Maricopa County Jail have been given permission to >>strip down to their government-issued pink boxer shorts. >> >> * On Wednesday, hundreds of men wearing pink boxer shorts were >>chatting in the tents, where temperatures reached 128 degrees. "This is > >>hell. It feels like we live in a furnace," said Ernesto Gonzales, an >>inmate for 2 years with 10 more to go. "It's inhumane." >> >> >> * Joe Arpaio, who makes his prisoners wear pink, and eat bologna >>sandwiches, is not one bit sympathetic. "Criminals should be punished >>for their crimes - not live in luxury until it's time for parole, only >>to go out and commit more crimes so they can come back in to live on >>taxpayers money and enjoy things many taxpayers can't afford to have >>for themselves." >> >> >> * Wednesday he told all the inmates who were complaining of the heat > >>in the tents: "It's between 120 to 130 degrees in Iraq and our soldiers > >>are living in tents too, and they have to walk all day in the sun, >>wearing full battle gear and get shot at, and they have not committed >>any crimes, so shut your damned mouths!" >> >> >> * Way to go, Sheriff! nixy
mine too! Don't get me started on this subject - I'd have thiefs in the stocks in town for people to pelt with rotten veg - if they thought they were gonna be humiliated like that it would deter them far more than a trip to the cells. I'll leave finger chopping off etc for another day...........

ir_fuel
>> * Way to go, Sheriff! If all prisons were like yours there would be>>a lot less crime and we would not be in the current position of running > >>out of prison spaces. Am I the only one who thinks this is short-sighted nonsense the US is one of the Western countries where they have the highest penalties for crimes (how many times dont year ppl getting convicted for 100's of years in prison). They also have the death penalty. Here we have neither of those, now where is the crime rate the highest .... Personally i think criminals don't consider the fact that they can spend 20 years in prison (or get sentenced to death) when they commit their crime. They just consider the fact that they won't get caught doing it. The only way to stop crime effectively is to make sure that the chances of getting caught get much higher. Stupid example: What would scare a car thief the most: The fact that if he gets caught he would spend 10 years in prison? Or the fact that if he gets caught he will spend 2 years in prison, but the chance of getting caught stealing a car will be 95%? Also think about the fact that where the difference between rich and poor is bigger, there is more crime. I'm not saying we should start giving those people money, housing or god-knows-what for free, but its pretty clear the American social system surely isnt helping (starting by the fact that public education usually is crap, and private schools are for the rich ...). Just my 2cents ...

Guest prescience
Why don't we put out prisoners to work and use the income to make the prison self-supporting - it's what they do in China and I can't see why we don't do it here? Sky TV

Sky TV Many prisons have industries but most make a big loss. The most common is laundry for hotel and resurants, re-cycling electrical goods, and many open prisons run farms. The work is more about giving the prisoners something to live for as they get paid. This way they can pay for the In Cell TV...
GC350z
It costs more to keep one muppet in jail in Ireland than the average salary.

If someone can't contrive a scheme where a workforce working for £6/day cannot turn a profit compared to one paying £6/hour then that someone is not trying very hard and if you say, they don't want to work well neither do the poor sods on £6/hour but they are incentivised into having to and the same must be possible here; no release until your work delivers £x/profit for example. To say it won't work because it doesn't work is no answer IMO
nixy
There's a reason they have tv's, play stations etc in prison (not that I agree with it). It creates a system of keeping control by being able to take something away from you if you don't behave and reward you if you do - bit like with children. I guess it makes life easier for the staff. rmmackfc
The world needs a few more Joes! The Saudi's cut your hand off for stealing...I wouldn't imagine car crime is high there! To me, a lot of criminals will get a better std of living in prison. They know there will be meals on the table and a bed for the night....albeit with a man named Bubba

I guess it would be fun .... in the beginning ...

I worked in the middle east for a number of years and you could safely leave your keys in your car and your valuables on the seat and they would still be there when you returned - try that here and see what happens!
