JetSet
Could be a bit of scaremongering but.... The Treasury has already announced a review of VED bands to ensure drivers make a fair contribution to the public finances even as cars become more fuel-efficient Read the full horror story below. http://news.sky.com/home/politics/article/16228241 Pete
AK350Z
Why, did you think it might go down? You know its going to go up and up, because they are looking at a direct debit system for it!
The Bounty Bar Kid
"It proposed a system where drivers are charged by the mile and face higher charges if they are travelling through busy areas at peak times. "Such a move would generate substantial economic efficiency gains from reduced congestion, reduce the tax levied on the majority of miles driven, leave many (particularly rural) motorists better off, and provide a stable long-term footing for motoring taxes without necessarily raising net additional revenue from drivers," the report said. IFS director Paul Johnson said motoring taxation did not reflect the costs drivers impose on others and that revenue from petrol was set to fall. He added: "A national system of charging related to mileage and congestion, largely replacing the current system of fuel taxation, would help solve both those problems." Would like to see this! No, of course not , but it could be bad news for pre 2006 car owners.
AK350Z
The whole VED system is bulls**t though, as they are taxing ownership, not use.

mc
It's always about making money for the government. They put the tax up on everything they say is 'bad', saying it's for our own good to make it too expensive and therefor stop us buying it... they make a load of money from that until people change their habits, then find something new to make up the lost revenue!
