sl114
I just checked my online banking and found out that £105 has been taken out my account from a company called www.webdollar.se. Apparently someone set up an account at Maharajah Club Casino and put down a deposit using my details and the money left my account this morning. Barclays are investigation however i am now without a card and have to fill in all their forms to claim it back. It makes me sick!! so warning to all, when you hand over your card to anyone, or are at cash points, make sure everything is as it should be!!!! Revsport
Thats harsh. Its too easy to get someones details. There was a camera show on tv showing a waitress getting card details. he had some metalic stripe thing on that you would never have seen. As long as you have card protection you will be ok. Moral of the story allways use protection.
nixy
similar thing happened to me - my debit card was used twice at some American place - a small amount first time - probably as a test then a larger amount of about 100 quid. I put it down to the fact that I do a lot of internet shopping. I only ever do it with credit card now and not debit card that way I'm totally protected. ir_fuel
Dunno overthere but Citibank has a pretty neat system. It allows you to generate a Visa card number from your original card number which is only valid for 1 transaction. Pretty safe for online buying methinks
sl114
Luckally I do have protection with my bank account, however i will never take out protection as an option as it is the banks obligation to protect against this stuff therefore you should not have to pay for it. I will keep you all updated as to what happens
nixy
Barclays paid mine back no problem - had to have a new card though which was irritating.

Tim S
As long as you have card protection you will be ok. Moral of the story allways use protection. You don't need card protection for this. Once you start the dispute process the onus is on the merchant or acquiring network to prove the transaction is legitimate (which they won't be able to do). I had a similar thing with a BarclayCard a few years ago - they handled it very well and sorted everything out pretty quickly (and I didn't have card protection). [EDIT] Was it a debit card or a credit card? 'Cos what I said above applies to credit cards. [/EDIT]
sl114
Mine was a debit card not credit card, however all done through the same process i have been told so i should see the money back in 10 working days once i have submitted the fraud documents

You don't always get the same protection with debit cards as the networks don't have the clout Visa or MasterCard have. Sounds like Barclays have some good systems in place for dealing with this sort of thing. I would hope my bank (HSBC) would be as helpful if it happened to me. GC350z
Sucks ass. It happened to a friend last year. Some ****er went into phone shop in Dublin and bought about 1k worth. I blame the shop for not checking purchases like that out. Card got cancelled money returned. New card issued. Never used. First statement. Phone shop again. 1.5 - 2k this time. She has now cancelled the card and wont get another one.
sl114
Strangely i was going to close my Barclays account today too, had all the documents to do it with. I bet they are watching me, now i have to stay with them a bit longer and they can take another £16 from me to have a privilege account!! Buggers they are
jim
Same thing happened to me in January. HBOS responded very well and sorted me out with a new card, and wiped out the £1000+ that had been run up on the card. Had to complete the usual declaration forms, but otherwise no hassle. Interestingly, my son works for a rival bank, and he says that rumours are rife that most of these cases arise from inside jobs - employees selling on card details to low-lifes. Wouldn't be surprised. We use chip and pin credit cards here now. Not sure if you guys do. So walking into a store and using some elses card like what happened to my mate is just insane. They need a card and pin to do it yet she had it.
stevie_350z
Some places let you use cards without the pin - like some petrol stations. I couldn't remember the pin for my new card so the geezer let me put 65 quid on it with just my scratty sig - didn't even check ID though I offered it. monkfish
Have had this happen to me 2 times on a Visa and an Amex card. Got fully refunded both times.
Removed
card can be cloned with a skimmer, and that's through the magnetic strip at the back, making the chip and pin measure rather useless never let your card out of sight in restaurants/shops.
