rabbitstew
Ive been a couple of times and it used to be pretty cheap. That was before the euro came out mind you, when all the prices suddenly rocketed through the roof. Only thing I hated was all the drug dealers and beggers around the red light area hassling and threatening you. I tried to avoid that if possible. Some lovely architecture though and nice streets etc.. As others have said the Ann Frank museum is interesting and worth seeing whilst you are there. One of my favorite things when I was there was to sit in the window of one of the pubs near the red light area, with a nice pint of Heineken (albeit with a 6inch frothy head on it) and people watch. You see some really funny scenes.
Vik54
Amsterdam, done it once, never again. Over priced, shady, sleazy place. You do need to venture out of the red light district you know..... +1 - lost count of how many times have been there... only place to avoid is the Red Light district - by all means go have a wander if you've never seen it but the city has so much more to offer. Sadly just heard on the news that some judge in the Netherlands has just passed down new law that only native Netherlanders will be able to purchase cannabis in cafes after next year so the tourist industry will take a hammering To the OP - you have to go to Cafe GOA for a hot choc - on the outer edges of RL district does nice cakes too
The G Man
Been about 30 or so times ( stationed at RAF Bruggen a couple of times so the Dam wasn't that far away and I use to work for a Dutch company a while ago ) Firstly, GO TO THE RED LIGHT DISTRICT!, just after dark when it's at it's brightest, it is a must do even with partners, very colourful, yes a bit sleazy, but a one off! You're partners will not be offended. Some of the best bars and cafe's are in or around it. There is the usual suspects such as the Anne Frank, Van Gogh and Rembrandt museums, don't waste your money on the sex museum, it's pish! If getting a taxi, especially late at night, make sure you know the price before you get in, some of the taxi drivers are con artists and sometimes they can put up a fair fight Get a strippencart (sp?), for the trams, you can get them from Centraal Station and machines if I recall, gives you up to 10 journeys very cheaply, the No 2 tram, if it still runs, will take you round all the major attractions including the diamond centre, Leidsplien, etc. The Zoo, and don't laugh, is a great couple of hours and is a short but very scenic walk from the centre of town, good bars and cafe's en route and in the zoo. Lastly, if you decide to erm.. indulge in a bit of space cake, there is space cake and space cake!! Don't do as I did with my mrs and another couple we went with. I bought 4 coffees and two cakes, took the cakes to the table, returned for the coffees and when I bought them back my mrs and the other girl had scoffed the lot!!! "Hmm, delicious" they said, "real nice bit of banana loaf", fook me, Me and my mate spent the rest of the night babysitting two gibbering mongs that kept telling us that the doors to the hotel were turning into bananas!!!! Enjoy, the Malaysian restaurants are mostly great due to the Dutch colonial connection, and do have a shmoke and a panakinnen
