Porsche Cayman S to a 350Z?

Hi

This is my first post, although I’ve been lurking for a while.

I currently have a Cayman S and as much as I love it, I think it has to go. I ‘d like to free up some cash and have a bit of a project, something for weekends and maybe do a few track days.

I’ve looked at a few different cars (TVR 350C, VVX 220 turbo), but I’m interested in the Z350 because you can mod it to fairly big power for sensible money.

I thought I’d maybe spend about 18-20K on a car and 5k on mods of some kind. I’ve got a test drive lined up within the next few days.

A few questions for you

Does anyone have any info regarding the in-gear times of the Z (50-70mph, 60-80mph, that sort of thing)?

How hard is the ride on a UK car, I’ve seen a few Jap cars with more power and a more suitable engine for mods, but I’ve heard the ride is a bit to firm, is there any other difference between UK and Jap cars?

How much cash am I looking at, to get a supercharger installed which will give me about 400BHP?

How much does the TC interfere with the fun, the Cayman S is set up to be braver than I am and doesn’t seem to give a crap if I’m going side ways. What’s the 350’s like.

Do you feel the weight of the car under braking?

How fast is the 350Z A to B, the Porsche is greater than the sum of its parts and is really quick cross country?

In gear times?----- does it really matter when your planning on 400bhp?

Ride? ---- I find its pretty good as standard, although the damping could be better, i dont find it too firm to be honest. Suspension (and brakes see below) are meant to be among the best mods though.

TC -------- i find it pretty good, it does let a good deal of slip before it cuts power, if you manage to make it come on your probably not driving smooth enough. Turning it off is when you want to go sideways or on track. I find it comes on alot more when the roads are slippy.

Weight under braking? ------ Yes you can, its a pretty heavy car. Although the standard Brembo setup isnt the worst.

Specs? ---- theres plenty of info on here if you search, although the jap cars come in a completely different spec as the UK cars. UK has only 2 options and jdm more.

The early jdm cars like mine have different suspension than the uk equvilant but this was changed at a later date. 06 i think.

www.TDi-plc.com who post on here are well known and can offer plenty of options, turbo/supercharger. Theres some other companies on here as well that can help.

I know i aint help you too much but the search function is your friend. Plenty of info floating about.

I had lent me a Boxster S while my bumper was being painted on my Zed, only used it once and left it in my garage for over a week, just hated the thing compared to the 350..I know this is not very subjective, but buy a 350z you will not be dissapointed :teeth:

Welcome

I would say if you going to go down the FI route then limit you spend to top end 17K, this will give them 8k to spend on your mods, best option would be

US Sourced parts

Clutch

Coilovers

Brakes and pads

Vortech super charger

Then you are set to rock and roll, around 400 hp

close. late 04 IIRC.

Does anybody know what the differences were? Is it harder or softer than the UK setup?

I've gone on track and the instructor told me to leave the TC on; it's only correcting mistakes and won't reduce lap times, as it will still allow you to get the power on and get a touch sideways without interfering. It's there to stop you ditching the car.

Even with TC/ESP/whateverthethingyiscalled on you can get the car sideways if pushing hard (and i know what i am talking about  ). The only real issue is if you really have it going sideways and you want to correct the drift yourself that the TC system decides to "help" you with that, with quite some "abrupt" individual-wheel-braking to get the car back in line asap (which is logical, after all).
