Baby on Board

...do people take any notice of them?

M4 slip lane yesterday joining the M25, wife and 4 week old child in the back, doing 70 on the inside lane to turn off to M25. White van, hacking it up behind me, pulls out then swerves back in front of me forcing me to brake hard as he crossed the hatched lines

Woman, 4x4 Toureg, M25 joining A30, tail gaiting me for a mile at 50mph, about 5-10 yards max from my rear bumper, must have been able to look in through the back window to see Alfie staring back at her.

Don't people get it? Or are we as I suspect, as a nation dumbing down?

The world is full of idiots with no consideration for anything or anyone other than those who are sat in the big metal box with them. That is until something goes wrong and they get a reality check.

Im constantly amazed about the standard of driving i see on a regular basis. Its as if some people get in a car and their brains just switch off.

Its the primary reason I've swapped our two daily drives for semi tanks. Its amazing how much room people give a "big fat gypsy white" Range Rover.

Best tip is to go to some specialist baby/child seat store and just have them check the fitting of any seats you have. That would be one of the most important items in the event of any incidents.

That's not my understanding of baby on board signs.

The purpose I was always told and believe is so the rescue services are made aware that there is a baby buried in the wreckage of your car somewhere or could have been thrown out of the vehicle.

How many people remove the signs when they are not carrying a small child in the car?

Yep we are now at three stage levels as follows; dumb, dumber and dummest. who don't give a

I think your right, there are too many people on the road who generally don't give a xxxx.

There are also some people with children in the car who don't think either. I once had a woman with kids in the car trying to chase me because she pulled out whilst I was along side her, so I dually tooted, and can only assume woke her kids up.

 I would like to see you try to get Tom and Harry in child seats (both now over 6')

I personally don't pay attention to them. It's probably not what you want to hear but it wouldn't change the way I drive on the road. I think there will always be cocks on the road in any given situation. I just try and make sure I'm not one of them.

When I was driving through Kew the other day I saw a Micra, two kids in the back belted in and the woman driving along...with the near side rear door open...and not talking a crack here, but fully perpendicular to the car open :scare:

Im not sure the baby on board signs are for the emergency services? Otherwise why do you have to put them in the rear window? Thats the last place I would put any information for occupancy...if anything the sign is just as likely to be tossed away from the car in an accident as the baby/chair? I really have never heard of the baby on board signs being there primarily for the emergency services? Bizarre. If anything if I wanted the emergency services to know I would have it in big letters across the dash or something.

When I moved last year I hired a white van and on one of the trips I accidentally cut a car up, pulled out and completely missed a gear

As soon as I could I pulled back in and was ready to give my best apologetic look as the car went past.

What i got was a bloke leaning across causing the car to swerve and calked me a *****, his missus shouting even worse... and 2 toddlers in the back looking about as scared as I have ever seen kiddies :surrender:

I have remembered their faces as I am sure they will turn up on Jeremy Kyle

Me neither, but then again I always leave a big gap to the next vehicle anyway  I think they are a bit useless anyway, more of a fashion statement than anything else.

But its not about that is it? I thought it was so that other drivers know that there is a baby on board, that I will most likely be driving very cautiously, and that you should not be expecting me to be diving out into gaps at turnings, accelerating as fast as most people etc. Just like someone has a P plate, its to let others know that the driver is still learning and new on the road and to expect that they wont be as experienced as other

I'd have thought so long as you drive sensibly, whether you have a sticker or not should make no odds?

I certainly wouldn't treat anyone different on the basis of a baby on board sticker, you can't blame bad driving on having a baby and what other difference does it make apart from rescue vehicles possibly?

I have never thought of it from a rescue vehicle point of view and I didn't drive when mine were little... It makes perfect sense and I would hope if 2 cars were in an accident and one had a 'Baby on Board' sticker you would hope that at least that car would be checked first. Good point about taking it down when there is no child or baby in the car, can't see anyone doing that though

I guess that answers my question then! People dont care about driving considerately, even when they could potentially put the life of an innocent baby in danger with their driving. Sad really.

Yeah it is mate, and some of them even have babies on board themselves :surrender:

Try not to let the actions of a few mongtards make you too over protective though, it's a balancing act

Warning.

Lexx is about to be controversial....

I honestly don't get the point of these signs.

People are supposed to drive in a respectful manner AT ALL TIMES (obviously I know this doesn't happen in the real world).

What bloody difference should a sign in a car have as to how he/she or I drive and react to each other?

Same thing with that bloody green "P" sticker people have on.

I know Dave, its hard though, that white van who nearly caused an accident in the first post...if we had pulled up to some lights and i caught him up, well lets just say the police better have his dental records on hand for ID - I was angry. Saying that though, not a good example to set for little Alfie

Not controversial at all mate, in fact tame and quite late in the debate by your standards ;)

Look up 'behavioural economics' and associated theory - why do toilet urinals have little pictures of flies and the like on them for example ;) I like to think he idea is that subconsciously at least gives the more sensible driver a little nudge that reminds them that tail gaiting kills, cutting people up kills, driving like a muppet kills - a reminder to back off a bit without telling people as such, but making them make a choice to behave differently.

That's my point though, that ***** would have cut up whoever was in front you could have had a 20ft neon sign on the roof it would have made no difference.... and far better to set a good example for Alfie than feel the alfa male....
