Gearbox Options... UPDATED

I'ts got to the stage now where my gearbox is basically ruining the car, so something has to be done. I've found a few second hand units kicking around but i can only find CD008 boxes, not the legendary CD009. The best quote i've had for one of these is £995 fitted. I also know of a very well respected gearbox refurb place near me who've quoted around £600 for removal, a strip-down and synchro replacement, and re-fitting.

So i guess my question is, is the CD008 gearbox worth the hassle, as it won't be all that different from my 2004 (53 plate) box and has an unknown history. But on the other hand I really have no idea what to expect from a gearbox refurb either

Can anyone offer any experiences or opinions on this because I really don't know what to do

Thanks

curious as to what conclusion you come to, i would like a slicker gearbox too, im told the gearbox in the early Zed is the Nissan Navara gearbox, hence its rather clunky nature, i was wondering if a rebuild would help something that is an inherent design fault!

keeping my ear peeled on this one!

I've been here long enough to :pmzmanalex: as a first port of call ;)

unfortunately he can't help with this one.

taffyjason, I'm wondering exactly the same about the rebuild being able to correct what is basically just a crap design. I'm hoping someone on here will have had it done and be able to share the knowledge.

i was hoping someone had made an aftermarket box! , ive done plenty of driving days at places like silverstone ... and my fave gearchange thus far was a 911 GT3, much better than the ferrari F360 i drove afterwards...but the Ferrari did make my pants tingle!

What exactly is the problem with the box :snack:

Nothing interesting i'm afraid. The usual 2nd and 3rd gear synchro issues, but it's properly chronic now, despite fresh oil and molyslip. I might as well not use the clutch below 3rd as it crunches away like a trooper regardless, lol.

yeah i tried that, i used to go into central before going into 2nd, but since i put some god awful Halfrauds oil in the gearbox, the thing is a total pig in the cold...lesson learned, no @*!# oil in future!!

Nissan genuine oil + molyslip still notchy when cold but smooth as you will get once it warms up

Not on mine anymore, 2nd and 3rd stay notchy no matter how warm the box gets

But Taffyjason, i'd definitely try new oil + molyslip before anything drastic, as it did considerably improve mine for a while. just too little too late in my case i think.

Here's a thought; does anyone know if you can fit the stronger syncros from the later boxes into an earlier box? Pretty sure someone is going to make me feel pretty stupid for suggesting such a thing, but you never know.

Yours does sound a bit fecked DB :surrender: It isn't one of the strongest components of a 350 huh.... hope you source a decent replacement and fall in love with your car again :cloud9:

I had a similar experience about 6 months into owning mine on about 75k, I started getting a horrible buzzing and vibration in 5th and then the clutch became so bad it hurt my left knee... new clutch & flywheel with a gearbox oil change and it was sweet as a nut, that was nearly 30k ago now :drive1

i just changed my clutch and slave cylinder, the biting point is about a foot closer to the bulkhead than it was before! much lighter too now, but unfortunately gear change hasnt improved, so going for proper oil and friction reducing additive next

Ahh, had not thought of foreign ebays, thanks for those.

I may still consider a refurb simply because I want to know how well it will work, and it's cheaper if it doesn't work.

You are most welcome. Since i live i Denmark, and we only have around 20 350zed in Denmark, its a must for me to source parts in UK / Germany.

i Would spend the extra penny and buy a "new" gearbox.

Have a chat to R35Lee,as im sure he is a really gearbox guru. I was having a few issues with mine, and as a first port of call, changed the oil and added moly slip, and its been as good as gold since.

Im sure R35lee told me that the newer box in the HR engine was not compatible with the DE engine,as the housings are different.

OK, thought I'd update anyone who is interested as it may help others:

I now have a CD009 with only 13K on it sitting in my garage :yahoo:

These are NOT easy to find but turns out there are some out there, just still in cars. Basically you have to stop looking for anything as specific as a CD009 or even a 350z gearbox and just do the legwork phoning up big breakers yards. I started with the Jap specialists and had no luck at all, then started trawling through the websites of pretty much every breaker in southern England. Lots of them don't know what they actually have i.e. what year etc. or have misleading or out of date websites, and there are a lot of imports with their uk first reg date given as the MY of the car which is unhelpful. Also many of them clearly don't care about getting your money as they're not even prepared to check the model sticker on the gearbox to make a sale. However the advantage of the non-specialist breakers is they have no idea that the CD009 boxes are relatively rare and desirable compared to the earlier ones, so they charge about £300 less than you see them going for from Jap breakers on ebay, mine was £550 next day delivered for a 13k mile box. I saw some finished Ebay auctions where higher mileage boxes went for over a grand.

So basically take a day off work (which is what I did, I have a nice boss and far to much unused holiday) sit at your pc with a phone and many, many cups of coffee, and you might get somewhere. It's amazing what's hidden back on page 25 of a google search.

Hope that helps someone

Now i just have to pay someone to fit it :headhurt:
