DannyP
Hey, I'm a little bit worried and hoping that someone can tell me whats up (if anything) I've just bought a '05 UK 350z GT (3 weeks ago), and I've started noticing now I've been driving it a bit harder that it pulls fine in 1st up to 6th. Yet when I go to overtake in 5th or 6th gears at about 60 mph. It feels as though the rear wheels are spinning up (which I believe they are due to the smell of burning rubber). The revs go up yet the car doesnt accelarate. Now the question is, is this normal due to the massive amount of torque in the car, and I just need to be a bit more light footed or is there a problem that I need sorting out. I wouldn't normally worry but this is my first powerful RWD car and my previous cars (Fiesta 1.1 and Leon 1.8 se) don't spin the wheels in 5th gear. Other things that may be of interest: - Traction Control Light is not coming on - Front wheels are 245/35/19 rears are 265/35/19 (tho I believe these have been stretched to fit a 275mm rim) - Tyres are Kenda Kaiser (which I believe are @*!#) Hopefully someone can put my mind at risk and tell me I just dont know how to drive properly Thanks in advance
Neilp
sounds like a dodgy clutch tbh
ChrisS
I think the smell is the clutch burning not the tyres in 5th or 6th.
coldel
Check to see if you got a turbo or super charger under the bonnet...if not, its a clutch me thinks
leonk
I'll agree with that, sounds like clutch unfortunately.
DannyP
Sh*t I was hoping you weren't going to say that . Roughly how much is a new clutch? Tomorrow I'll give the dealer give grief and hopefully he'll change it. I've got to admit its annoying the hell out of me, I was just thinking it was because we've had all the snow recently and the back end was slipping, though tonight thought I'd try and find out what it was as the roads are pretty dry. Not exactly chuffed with your answers but thanks anyway
spursmaddave
Your looking at about £800ish for clutch / flywheel & fitting and ask about an Exedy Clutch & Fidanza flywheel, or if you want to be boring a standard set
Lexx
If the tyres were spinning up at 60mph you'd know about it, as the end would be trying to overtake the front. I'd say like the others that the clutch is on the way out.
ChrisS
I've just bought a '05 UK 350z GT (3 weeks ago), Dealer should sort it as it's 'not fit for purpose'.

As you can tell I'm not exactly brilliant in knowing the mechanics of my car, though this is probably to be expected having changed from a Leon with under 1/2 the power of my new baby
HaydnH
Tell the dealer asap even if you can't get to them. Also get a quote for the uprated parts from Alex asap and tell the dealer "if they can get new OEM parts cheaper then feel free, otherwise go with Alex". ZMANALEX
Thanks for all the referals guys Certainly sounds like clutch slip DannyP and the sad thing is that it appears to be slipping without any inducement which would make me believe that the selling dealer must have known about it. Due to amount of slip that you are getting then you MUST swop out the fly as well, which I doubt the selling garage will be keen to do. Anyhow all parts in stock if and when you require them Alex. Hey, Do you get a discount for purchasing both, I'm just trying to sell this as much as possible to the dealer. Though tbh I'm thinking they won't want to be upgrading my clutch . Bastard dealers Also what is the delivery charge to UK mainland? Btw if I don't swap out the fly will it be a case of having to get it done pretty sharpish anyway? If you do not swop out the fly now, expect to have to pull the box out again in the not to distant future. The fly is already discounted from £1100.00 (Nissan price) to £345.00 (Zmanalex price) If the garage prices up the parts from a Nissan Parts Department they will be quoted circa £1100 for the fly alone, so perhaps a cash settlement from them may be the way forward for you. Hey Alex, How much would Nissan quote for only a clutch replacement? I can imagine the pug dealer giving the OP a hard time wanting to replace the fly at the same time as technically that's still fit for use unless the OP can prove otherwise. Maybe getting the pug dealership to quote for just the Nissan OEM clutch change and then offering a cheaper Alex price for both would convince them? As you say the garage will certainly not roll over and just hand out a fly so the OP will have to fight his corner vigorously to get a result. Worse case scenario, garage replaces the clutch under warranty and OP supplies them with a fly. What is the mileage on this car? First stage is to inform the garage of the issue and get it looked at asap. Everything is hypothetical at the moment until a diagnoses is carried out. First stage is to inform the garage of the issue and get it looked at asap. Everything is hypothetical at the moment until a diagnoses is carried out. The car has 57000 miles on it, so I was aware that the clutch needs replacing about now, luckily for me its happened whilst still under warranty. Luckily my mate is a mechanic and also when I brought the car the PUG dealer said that should anything go wrong then I can get it fixed at any VAT registered garage which is good. I'm shooting over to my mates tomorrow to double check it is the clutch then if needed he'll get a full report done (both from his garage and another) stating what needs doing. Fingers crossed this should be enough of a persuasion to get both done under warranty, then it'll just be a case of arguing over the money and what parts I'm allowed to get. Ps. Thanks for all the feedback guys

DannyP
Right been to the garage this morning and my clutch is f**ked. This morning I could barely get any drive, a lot worse than last night. Now just looking into prices for the clutch and flywheel (though I am determined this isnt going to be my problem ). Am I right in thinking that the OEM spec clutch is Exedy and the Flywheel LUC, but you'll all recommend going for a Fidenza single mass flywheel instead (if possible). Therefore only the flywheel would be uprated and the clutch left as stock, or would the Exedy clutch also be an uprated clutch. As you can probaly gather I'm a little confused . Can someone please enlighten me?
Neilp
unless your going to be modding i'd stick with the luk dual mass fly. The lightened one will chatter alot at low revs
spursmaddave
The fidanza chatters a bit at idle thats all nothing major
DannyP
So thought I'd let everyone know what the outcome of all this hassle is as you've all been so helpful. Everything is all sorted, PUG dealer is paying for it all including flywheel (who said all dealers were bastards ). Hopefully get my baby back tomorrow evening, if not Wednesday morning. I thought it pulled well before, now its gonna fly . Zmanalex, thanks for all the info buddy, unfortunetly won't be buying anything off you this time, but I'm sure I will in the future. You know supporting the community and all that. In a couple of weeks I'll clean her up and get some pics on here for you all to drool over Thanks again everyone Dan
