Autogear box intermittantly stuck in park?

Ola - suppose I should try and find some dried out corpses in a Jag forum somewhere to ask this question but your a knowledgable bunch :p

Potential new motor - Jag XK (as convinced by Biscuit).......sounds good but the lady mentioned one issue. The auto gearbox sometimes sticks in park when the car is started up. You can override it with a little key thing next to the gear leaver and it drives fine and gear change is smooth (so she tells me).

Based on the limited amount of info I've given;

- Cheap Electrical gremlin (interlock solenoid maybe?)?

- Wallet busting knackered gearbox?

Why take the risk when there are plenty on the market?

+1 or if it is an issue then you should be able to find the fix easily. If you cant then I'd walk away. Could get John to get you the parts from work

If you can override it with the key then its likely to be some kind of solenoid that you are manally pushing out of the way, so its likely that is shot, but not knowing the car, how do you know its not the controller, ECU, etc? Really needs someone who knows about them to comment

Because I reallyreallyreally like it and its not just any old XK. Other than this glitch on the face of it, its a nice low mile example with an Arden bodykit.

Just seems a shame to walk away if its a cheap fix.

I've asked the lady selling to see if she can get it fixed as a condition of the sale.

I just wondered if anyone had heard of it if it was some sort of common problem in the world of auto-boxes. I know no one will want to be definitive in case I buy it and it breaks

 I'd literally just read that before I posted on here.

Everything I'm reading says 'cheap'.........but my garage (who admittedly are not Jag specialists) did a lot of sucking air through teeth and in fairness didn't actually diagnose it but just said 'be careful - if its fooked your bankrupt'.

XKEC is the place to join but it isn't cheap, membership is from memory about £50 but you get a quaterly magazine and access to everything XK in there. you can join and just be in the visitor section, but not alot happens in there. to be honest its worth its weight in gold, and you soon find it pays for itself, with access to the best people who know the cars.

i'll log on tonight as i think my paid membership is still up to date, but from what i remember it should just be a solenoid fix. the gear box being fecked usually shows signs of not changing gear smoothly, or unable to find reverse.

they are a sealed gearbox, but it is possible to top up and change the fluid, i believe you can borrow the special tool from the forum for the job.

they are a really nice group of people and a lot of knowledge on there. i've tried other jag forums, but because they deal with all marques the knowledge tends to be a bit watered down. where as XKEC is just XK's.

give me a bell tonight after 8 and i can chat with you then if you like

Cheers Rich.

I've spoken to a few peeps today and they've all said solenoid.

I've spoken to the lady selling it again and basically bid her down a grand on the basis that its got a few jobs to do - she's happy with 6k as she wants rid of the car (her husband just passed away and its was his car).

Think I'm going to go take a peek on Saturday (subject to Martins mate not coming back with some horrific response!)
