marzman
Hi all, I bought a set of stock 18's on eBay for winter earlier this month and over the last few weeks i've been spraying them up myself. I started out by doing one of them Orange... just for fun really: It looks alright in the pictures but in person it was too garish, so i have gone for an anthracite colour instead. I finished them last week and have just fitted them today. All i need now is to replace the tyres with something decent, and get a set of spacers all round. What do you think? Are they so good that i can sell my Volks?
MITZ@CougarStore
The colour works well, Chris, good job...
rabbitstew
Looks nice mate. Its funny, ive seen quite a few cars with orange wheels recently, so it must be becoming popular. Think the black colour looks better though, and will hide the dirt. Im seriously considering getting a set myself atm.

HEADPHONES
Stock 18s are a good looking rim. Look better than their more expensive Rays option. I bet the reflections off the curved spokes are even better in their new darker colour
marzman
Thanks for the comments guys... Im a bit gutted though to be honest... i had a plan that i was hoping that these wheels would look awesome so i could sell my Volks to raise some funds for a TV that i've got my eye on (It's £2500 )... but at work this morning my mate came up to me and said "Whats up with your car? It looks different... not as good somehow". I said i'd swapped the wheels and he said "Oh yeh, it looks gay put the others back on!" ...my theory with the TV was that i look at my wheels for maybe 15 seconds a day, whilst walking to and from my car... whereas i'd look at a 55" LED TV for 6 hours a day...! John tarantula
I actually prefer the standard wheels over the Rays, especially when they're clean! mine have lovely kurbing so a respray might be in line next year

(it was my fiance's idea!) ...wrap the tyres in cling film while taping down the enges with masking tape. Also, i did the inside of the wheels black. MLC35
Serious question. How exactly do you colour wheels? Do you go to the local hardware and get a can of spray paint for metal? Do you have to prepare them, etc. ? I have read about others 'doing' their wheels - but how?

Do you have to prepare them, etc. ? I have read about others 'doing' their wheels - but how? 1. prep your wheels by sanding with 800 grit wet and dry paper 2. Wash wheels with water to ensure all dust is gone 3. mask off tyres 4. spray several thin layers of primer 5. rub down with 2000 grit paper 6. Wash wheels with water to ensure all dust is gone 7. paint with several layers of spray paint 8. rub down with 2000 grit paper 9. Wash wheels with water to ensure all dust is gone 10. paint with several layers of clear lacquer Takes about a week to do it all, with drying times between layers etc... Your painting environment is important... i did mine in my garage, but the most important thing is your painting technique. light thin layers are the key to success, from a distance of about 12 - 14 inches. If you dont get complete coverage on your first pass, dont go over it - wait until you're doing the next coat. 8.

Yep, patience is the key. Should have mentioned that you should leave 15mins between coats of primer and leave 24 hours after primer before painting, and again 15mins between layers of paint etc etc...
