Z4 M Coupe or 370Z?

Very common? There were a limited number made between 2006-2008. Are u getting confused with Z4 M Sports? They are also 340bhp so I can see it being faster than my 280bhp zed. As for looks, IMO they don't look dated whatsoever, with a set of CSL wheels they look amazing.

 

Oh I thought it was a comparison to the 370, ;)

 

Yeah it is, point I was trying to make was its an upgrade from my 350. I'm still open to the idea of a 370 too, was looking for someones opinion who has driven both and which one they found to be better. Looks wise I think the M Coupe edges it.

A two or three hour test drive with each may settle it for you, living with it is a different matter, there's not be too many that have done that. As it's a straight comparison to the 370/Z4 M and not specifically to other, earlier variants, it'll come down to your own opinion.

 

Personally, and as someone who regurarly doesn't see any other 370's in a relatively populous area of the UK, other than the odd one at meets, the Z4 M doesn't offer the exclusivity/rarity, they are are literally a common sight along with TT's and Caymens for that matter round Glasgow/Central Scotland, with the Z4 M more common in the Edinburgh area..

 

Exclusivety isn't everything though, running costs, equipment/trim level/practicality all comes into the equation, some of the factors that you'll need to weigh up :thumbs:

The guy I bought a set of wheels off had just changed his Zed for a Z4 M coupe and he was pretty pleased with it although he had some fairly major dramas with the electrics that still needed some attention. They are certainly very nice cars but they don't stand out really, Z4's all look pretty much the same to me :shrug:

I think the reason why some get confused between the z4 and the z4m is that to the untrained eye they pretty much look the same and you see hundreds of z4`s.

 

Looking on the net at some performance figures.

 

z4m

338bhp, 269lb/ft torque. 0-60 in 4.8seconds, 155mph, weighs 1420kg

 

370z

326bhp, 270lb/ft torque, 0-60 in 5.1seconds, 155mph, weighs 1496kg

 

So, really there is very little in it looking at those very limited figures. But, really you`d need to try them both back to back and see what they are like in the gears on the road.

 

As for them being rarer... ive just done a search on autotrader, 60mile radius of my house and there are 8 z4m`s for sale, including both coupe and roadster. Likewise, searching for the 370z, there are 26 for sale within the same area. However, on the road, I definately see more z4`s and z4m`s than I do 370`s. In fact ive only seen 2 370z`s being driven.

 

Of course, im only looking at the 370z here. If you want to compare against all 350z`s then of course, there are more 350z`s out there, and if you are comparing a 276bhp car against a 338bhp car then surprise surprise its a no brainer as to which one would be quicker.

 

At the end of the day, really its down to test driving both cars, looking at the running costs, insurance, servicing etc and deciding which you prefer. Everyones different, so some may prefer the zed, others the z4m.

 

** Edited to reflect the 370z rather than the 313 350z. Out of interest, there are only 8 313 350z`s for sale in the same area which seems to make them as rare on the garage forecourts as the z4m. **

Thanks for that mate. I was comparing it to a 370Z tho! I have considered upgrading my 54 plate to a 57 plate 350Z but not sure it's worth my while. I'd rather push the boat out for an M Coupe or 370Z

 

Yeah, i dont think it would really be worthwhile going from an older 350z to a newer 350z. Like you say, you`d be better off getting the 370z or the m. When I test drove the 370z, I really didnt think it felt any quicker than my 313 model, but id think if you went from an older zed to a 370z your`d definately notice a difference.

I hate to see this on our forum and I hate to agree even more!! :lol:

 

However my had a Z4M coupe when they first came out and it is hands down the best car I've ever driven!! I do however get more looks and comments in my Z so I'm not fussed. The quality of the interior is too in my opinion and the pop up sat nav is very James bond!!!

I know the 3litre Z4 is as fast as 350z,so the Z4Mc should be significantly quicker than a 350z,as it has 80hp more than the 3 litre Z4. So it would be like comparing a supercharged Zed,to an un-supercharged Zed.

If you can afford the running costs of the Z4,then id go for one of them. They are pretty darn tasty to look at,and go very well. Though the straight 6 engine has never done it for me,even in E46 CSL form.

The normal 3litre Z4 only has 261bhp and 232lb/ft of torque, so thats significantly less than the 308bhp and 264 lb/ft of the 313 350z and a lot less than the 370z has. I guess a normal z4 may be able to keep with the older lower powered zeds but would struggle against the 313 or 370 who both have similar power / torque to the z4m.

When I was looking into buying a Zed a couple of years ago, I wanted a Z4 but couldn't stretch budgetwise. With hindsight I'm pleased because the 350Z does seem more special than Z4's, exept for the Z4M which I'd have over the Zed TBH. I have heard that the handling isn't as good as it could be, but from memory there is a suspension (maybe even ARB) mod that sorts it. I don't know if this applies to more recent cars.

If you have the budget I'd go for a Cayman personally...

I love the Z4m coupe, being a huge BMW and Zed fan I think the 370 loses out on looks to the beemer but not by much and I'd be proud to be seen in either. I'm considering my next car, and for the budget its looking like Cayman S or 370z, I'd love the beemer and it would be cheaper but I've heard its really small inside and I'm a big lump. I will try and have a go in one though.

 

Oh and to the guy who saw 12 - perhaps its the same one and he was lost?? :teeth:

 

I travel to london a lot and have only seen 1-2 on the roads, I've seen more 370s but not a huge amount. Both cars have a lot of road presence, just drive both and see which one makes you grin the most.

Nope we have one of the biggest BMW dealers in our area and there's an abundance of z4's and z4 m coupes.

 

Really not a fan of the Beemer. Looks like a car for a rich mans missus to be honest. Would save a bit more and buy a 911 instead.

 

New BMW's are renowned for being very unreliable. My missus dad had endless issues with his 760li and ended up having a new engine put in due to them being unable to repair it successfully. The i-drive system failed on countless occasions also.

Really? BMWs strike me as one of the most reliable brands out there. Sure you can always find examples of issues, but given how many they sell its not surprising. I'd be more concerned about porsche reliability (especially as I'm looking to buy one). I've owned many BMWs and frequented many BMW forums and get the impression the reliability is superb. Though I get pretty much the same impression of the zed.

Every Beemer our family owned has been a nightmare and so has the customer service. The 911 c4s was fantastic and had zero issues. But when spending almost 100k on a New 7 series for it to be in the garage more than it is out then I'm pretty sure that says it all.

 

Dont get me wrong I nearly bought a 335 m sport conv just before I bought my zed. I love the look of BMW's and my mate just picked up a cracking 5 series business edition. I love the look of these cars and the interior but I'm afraid I think, IMO, that A z4 ,no matter the spec, is just too feminine to look at...

The i-drive system failed on countless occasions also.

I found out this weekend that the idrive (assuming thats the media controller wheel thingy whatsit) actually runs on a ring network, with fibre-optic connectors. Apparently if anything in the chain gets damaged (headunit, navunit, bluetooth, CD changer, idrive wheel itself, etc, etc) it can cause the whole network to fail. Some right feck-tard must have decided on that topography when all other manufacturers are using a typical bus layout. A friend who told me this has learnt a lot over the past few weeks as a car he has interest in has this problem. It took a specialist about a day to find the reason the idrive wheel wasnt working right was because of a faulty bluetooth unit :headhurt::thumbdown:

Thats mental.

 

Mind you, my old neighbour ran a body repair shop, and I remember him telling me that if a headlamp on a beemer goes, you cant just nip down your local parts place, buy one and plug it in. It has to be coded to the car before the car "accepts" it which involves plugging the car into a computer etc... which from what he was saying was a main dealer job, which automatically jacked the price up to some ridiculous amount.

Battery went flat in the 760 supposedly and ended up coming out of the dealer with a new engine

It was a joke of a car. Ended up "written off" :lol:

 

Although all this happened I would still love one. The new shape is awesome!

To be fair any manufacturer can have issues with the odd car as a Friday afternoon special, regardless of price point. Look at the issues Simon George is still having with his spanky new 458 for example.

 

I genuinely don't think you can buy a bad car these days. Even the joke that used to be the Korean cars is now as out of date as the Skoda ones, as their quality is right up there with the mid-range stuff now. :)

To be fair any manufacturer can have issues with the odd car as a Friday afternoon special, regardless of price point. Look at the issues Simon George is still having with his spanky new 458 for example.

 

I genuinely don't think you can buy a bad car these days. Even the joke that used to be the Korean cars is now as out of date as the Skoda ones, as their quality is right up there with the mid-range stuff now. :)

Even fifth gear rated the lada riva as best 4x4 a couple of weeks ago.

 

Its the mistakes in manufacturing process which makes a car bad these days.

Most are pretty well designed. People expect Ferraris to brake down though. If you buy a rolls Royce phantom or the like you wouldn't expect it to come with many issues. It's more the expectation from the manufacturer which you rely on and not soley to do with costs.
