Engine Blown

Hi guys,

My engine went bang today when travelling on the M3 for work. Car was on 80k miles.

The revs trembled, I lost oil pressure and had a big cloud of white smoke puff out the pipes :byebye:

The AA man (had to join at roadside for £250 - if you don't have breakdown cover, get it now!) said it's got a hole in the bottom end. He took the dipstick out and it had been chewed up and twisted by the force.

Soooooo - what are my options? Seems to me that a DE engine from ebay for around £2000 fitted is my best bet, but any advice/sympathy is welcome.

Thanks,

Stu :bang:

Cheers guys,

The dipstick was chewed up not just twisted, it's in a pretty sorry state :(

I've also been given part of my bottom end that the AA man found on the roadside! My oil pressure was slightly lower than normal a couple of weeks ago so I topped it up with the right oil and was planning on getting it to Abbey for a P3 service. Frustrating knowing that it was probably caused by high mileage for work (2000 a month) and poor maintainance on my part.

Straight engine swap is best bet if I'm going to get it going again, but I've considered selling it as is for around £4000 or even breaking it.

Gutted is an understatement.

Will the HR go in?

Also my gearbox had been grinding on 5th & 6th, so if I'm swapping the engine I should really do the gearbox aswel.

I've had it uprev'd by Abbey and I'm worried I'm going to lose my mapping rights, which is the majority of the cost if I remember correctly. And just to make this situation even more painful for me, I was hoping to sell the car relatively soon for a 5 door, as there's now a 'baby stuRS' on the way :teeth:

That sucks man sorry to hear, same thing happened with my mr2 funningly emough on the m3 too!!! god im gonna go change my oil now!!

if it is oil starvavtion what a bummer to go may have been an underlying problem somewhere else and was burning oil.

Drop new puppy in there and bring the smile back to your face

try breaking cars on ebay too they never get listed an as an engine and may come up cheaper if you can strike a deal with them

for example

Thanks mate, I've had bike engines blow before but never a car. Wasn't a problem when it went, no locking wheels or grinding noises, just sucks now I'm having to pay for it.

Called the guy with the breaker in that link - he wanted £1295 + VAT. When I said I can get one for £1800 fitted he said "I'd advise you go for that one then sir"

W@nker.

Stu,

I can flash the ECU back to stock and then you can sell the license on or we can buy it back;

The HR conversion isnt easy we are just doing the said conversion , there are a lot of stuff different that is need to do the conversion and the wiring is a major job we have found out.

Give me a ring tomorrow to discuss the Uprev stuff thou.

Blown engine sucks. I had a similar thing on my R1... missus dumped me and moved out, I got made reduntant and my car was having problems, so I decided to MOT the R1 and have some fun on that. Took it to the MOT place, it passed first time, came out, did a wheelie and BANG... gearbox blew up.

Garages wanted about 1500quid to fix. I bought a complete low mileage engine / gearbox off ebay for 400quid, fitted it myself in about 3 hours and had it back on the road.

Ive a 1999 blue one. Had it since it was 2 years old. Did about 40k on the old engine, new engine only has about 5k on it.

Ive rejetted it all, modded the airbox, full race titanium akropovic exhaust, race fairing, no headlamps, no indicators, harris 916 style dampner, crash bungs, single seat and the rear light replaced by some leds in the seat unit. Needless to say the MOT man has to be a little "friendly".

Ive got it in bits atm as im just about respray it and stick some new Yamaha graphics on it. Im also trying to do something with the underseat plastic to make it look better although im not sure what to do yet. I dont want to forkout loads for one of these after market undertray things.

Which R1 have you got?

am not being funny mate

but i seen a program on bbc 1 called rouge traders

recon engines are not worth it.

if you ring nissan and price the engine parts up

you will see the difference in the price and then it makes you think how can a company sell it for £2000.

if i was you i would buy a second hand one

save the hassle and agro involved with recons.

Saying recon engines are not worth it because the BBC says all breakers are rip-off artists is a bit of a sweeping statement. There are plenty of honest breakers who'll sell the original engine as it came out of the car, and many specialists (some of them on here) who'll do reconditioned parts for pretty reasonable prices.

The reason Nissan charge so much for their parts is because they can, simple as. you can find genuine Nissan parts brand new for half what the stealers will charge without much trouble (again, from traders on here) so using Nissan list price as a guide is always going to make anything else look suspiciously cheap.
