How does the handbrake work?

Recommended Posts

Mine seems to roll back slightly after applying it.

For example, if i'm on a hill, out of gear, footbrake on. Then pull the handbrake on, let off the footbrake and the car will roll back slightly before being held/

Is this normal?

The handbrake works off brake shoes which are positioned inside the rear disc/drums.

The handbrakes are not great on the Zed, however once adjusted up properly then they are reasonable.

Mine was next to useless when I got the car, I could pull the handle up as far as it would go and it still wouldn't hold on any kind of hill. I adjusted it when i had the centre console out of the car, it's really simple to do and the handbrake is now about what you'd expect, it'll hold on pretty much anything if you pull it hard enough, i'd definitely recommend taking the time to do it.

Put it this way, I've driven 19 350's, plus my own and they all seemed to have weak handbrakes out of the box. But as Alex points out they're ok once properly adjusted. :)

Proper adjustment at service is key. It should be checked and adjusted at a service and if done so the handbrake is fine. However this is too much effort for most dealers to be bothered to do

If you do it yourself make sure you follow the proceedure in the service manual. You dont want the shoes touching the discs when driving normally ;)
