evest
Forgive the new thread but I now face a different problem. In a previous thread http://www.350z-uk.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=27&t=52993&start=0 I was at the stage of having installed my new HU - all working fine - and was trying to wire up a line-booster PC9-460. The 3amp fuse that the booster came with kept blowing so I decided to put in a 15amp fuse (350z manual says ignition power to the radio goes through a 15 amp fuse), figuring that the worst that could happen would be to ruin the line-booster. This didn't work and now I have got no power to the HU at all - it won't switch. So I undid the steps taken above, but still no power. I have checked all fuses - box on driver side and two boxes in battery bay - all good. To check that I haven't somehow ruined the new HU, I put the OEM HU back in and still I have no power (it whirs on connection but will not switch on). I think I've probably gone out of my depth and need to take it to a specialist to sort out, but anybody got any ideas what I have done here? Cheers
Karlp
Is it still grounded?
evest
Yeah I re-grounded it using the wire directly off the HU loom but this didn't help. As the OEM HU is not getting power either I reckon its a problem somewhere else - I'll re-check all fuses since this seems likely problem, but I'm pretty sure they were all ok. Karlp
Yeh check all your fuses on the car it self dude, sounds like somethings blown somewhere.
evest
Cheers mate - am I right in thinking the only places to check are the box on the driver side footwell, and the two boxes in the battery bay? If it's not a fuse then I'm all out of ideas!

evest
Have re-checked fuses, all are okay but still getting no power to the HU?!
Karlp
Have you got a volt meter dude? and check if theres any power coming through the connector blocks? You've nearly stumped me on this one!
Neilp
Have re-checked fuses, all are okay but still getting no power to the HU?! you could have melted one of the power cables by over-rating the fuse and it has then overdrawn on the cable and melted it
evest
Well just been out to pick up a curry and have no power to the centre console pods or the speedo/rev etc dimmers. So perhaps its one of the other fuses rather than the radio ones I have checked. Even though i put an overated fuse in the line-booster - would that not just affect the line-booster itself? Hope I haven't melted a cable - sounds difficult to sort out! Don't have a volt meter but can probably get one from work next week.

I blew the same one installing my headunit
Madmarky
Just a long shot but make sure the arial is plugged in, other than that just make sure none of the wires have been spliced and are grounding out on the cage or something.
evest
Karl, Ian, Bang on the money fellas - I've found the blown 10A fuse - it was the mirror fuse which I hadn't thought to check before now. Anyway, power restored, HU working - just gotta tackle the line-booster again - I think if I use a 10A in it this time, I should be ok - will post up some pics when the install is complete. Thanks for your help on this - very much appreciated, what a top forum!

BulletMagnet
If I remember correctly, I took the power to my line boosters off then main power wire from the HU loom, but ran a seperate ground to the bulkhead (I think I grounded it onto the bulkhead behind the cubby behind the dash crossbar)
evest
Cheers mate - do you remember what fuse you used for the line booster? The 3amp it came with blows every time - but using a 10amp causes the mirror fuse in the dash box to blow. Guess I could try a 5amp and see! BulletMagnet
they never blew on mine, so i havent actually checked what fuse is in them
Karlp
Sorry pal was at work this morning and just driving back from the lfc game. Will deffo check tomoro as swapping my centre console. Pretty sure it's a 10a tho
Karlp
Just thought... Have you spliced into the correct power cable off the hu??? This could cause the blowing if youve spliced into the wrong wire. Think I spliced into the ignition wire off the HU
