Septic
Hey guys, I doubt you guys remember me, I did lurk around here a few years ago hoping to get a 350z. Well, after seriously being torn between a Supra TT and a 350z I've finally decided to go for the latter. The thing is, whilst I'm ready to buy a Z, I cannot seem to find a decent quote at all! I was hoping you guys might have some helpful advice. Just a few details: I'm 26, with 3 years NCB (no accidents at all), no convictions and am getting quotes that are around the £2000 mark. Sky Insurance (who I have been with before) won't insure me on the basis that my current car is a 1.4L Polo and the transition to a RWD 280+bhp is quite steep (which it is) and I haven't got the requisite driving experience which is raising alarm bells on their end. Admiral came back with £2k. I've been scouring these forums and have come across some posts of < 20 year olds getting insured for less so I'm trying to remain hopeful that I can get a decent quote. Some of my friends have suggested being named as a second driver on my dad's insurance but I'm oblivious as to the legality of it all (even if he drives the car as much as me). Any help on the matter would be really appreciated Cheers

Chris`I
You should be easily getting cover for less than £1k with those details with Admiral. Are you in a bad postcode area? Any other details that could be pushing it up? I got my old 350z when I was in my low 20's and cover for the 1st year cost £800 with business milage too. If you can try it with family members as named drivers, especially female ones with good insurance records (mum, gf, sister). Dont be a named driver on your Dad's insurance, thats not legal AFAIK, but having them as named drivers on your insurance is

AFAIK I'm not in a bad postcode area. Sky Insurance did highlight that is was my lack of driving experience with more powerful cars which prevented them from insuring me. Thanks for the info regarding insuring my dad on my insurance. Hopefully that might lower the figures. im surpirsed at admirals quote. I've just realised it was Privilege nor Admiral I'll be calling them up now!
maxi-glasgow
Use somewhere like confused.com and see what kind of prices you are getting. I always do that and whoever looks the cheapest go onto their own website and you usually find it's cheaper again.
Chris`I
Makes more sense if it was Privileged - they wont like a young un with a powerful car. Give Admiral/Elephant a go as they tend to like us for some reason
Husky
agreed on admiral. i'm 25 with 5y no claims and mine is ~
DoubleDeuce1973
I can't see how you past car history makes any difference, no one has ever asked me what my last car was. +1 with a comparison website - Go Compare, compare the market etc etc
Cam350z
Hi I'm twenty and just recieved my 3-years no claims and for me to insure my 350z and my daily ford focus I was around £2000 on an admiral multi-car policy with all my family as named drivers. I would give admiral a phone and ask them if they could give you a better deal.
Septic
Cheers again. Yeah maxi, I went on confused.com and got the following figures (I'm not going to post the ones asking a ludicrous £3k for the excess!): Admiral: 1889.37 (£350 excess) Elephant: 1898.91 (same excess) These two are the cheapest I am getting but I just feel its a bit too much considering what others are getting (e.g Husky). I don't get it Do you guys reckon its worth giving these guys a call? Thanks!
DoubleDeuce1973
It doesn't make much sense. How long have you been driving? Any accidents or claims leading up to the start of your 3 years claim free driving? Any points for speeding etc? Annual mileage?
James B
+1 Use a comparison website Also - try putting your mum, dad and missus (assuming good records) as named drivers. I bet the premium drops!
wesmin
Call Admiral and put your dad on as an occasional driver
HaydnH
Also make sure you put your parents on there if they have a clean driving history, usually drops the quote a bit with people like Admiral/Elephant.
Ricey
Mate don't take this the wrong way but are you sure your not in a 'bad' postcode area? Those quotes are silly for your profile. Then again insurance has gone through the roof this year.
Ian
I can't see how you past car history makes any difference, no one has ever asked me what my last car was. +1 with a comparison website - Go Compare, compare the market etc etc You'd be surprised how many specialist companies will ask your history. If your only experience is with <100 hp FWD hatchbacks & you want to make a jump to a 300hp RWD car then a lot of companies wont want to insure you. Insurance is random at the best of times. My opening quote on the GTR was £4K - I ended up paying less for it than I did for my s/c Z. I would try Admiral/Bell/Elephant as they are usually the cheapest in these sort of situations - also try Sky & Chris Knott but I'm pretty sure both of those wanted to know my driving history aswell

Any accidents or claims leading up to the start of your 3 years claim free driving? Any points for speeding etc? Annual mileage? I've been driving for four years- I was on my dad's name in the first year so I didn't amass any NCB. I have no points on my licence and annual mileage is only 8k. Call Admiral and put your dad on as an occasional driver I'll definitely give that a try. Mate don't take this the wrong way but are you sure your not in a 'bad' postcode area? Those quotes are silly for your profile. Then again insurance has gone through the roof this year. I live in a relatively quiet area and my dad's insurance is something piddly like £20 a month (if that). I really don't think its a bad postcode area but how do I find out either way? I really am at a loss
Ricey
Feck knows............have you got a chick with a reasonable profile? Stick her on as a named driver - usually brings it down a fair bit...........or better still your Ma if you live at the same gaff. Insurance is the most frustrating pile of utter bollox I've ever come accross and the statistical crap they come outh with is verging on insane - for example my insurance is going up this year because I was hit by another person.......apparently that makes me 'statistically more likely to have a crash where I'm at fault'......go figure. Yup, the missus had that too. She went mental at them but still said statistically as she's been hit once, she's now more likely have a crash. They didnt win that stats war with a trained statistician when she started asking about correlations but said there was nothing they could do as puta said no. She did manage to wangle a bit more off, but not back to what it was before

rabbitstew
£2k isnt bad for your profile. Im nearly 40, have 18 years NCB, mainly on fast cars and about 8 years NCB on a 190mph motorbike, I live in the middle of nowhere in a quiet town near Northampton in a quiet cul-de-sac full of pensioners, and I was quoted 1400quid from the "specialist insurers". I got that down to about 700->800 from Admiral. Which was about 300quid dearer than a BMW M3 or a Porsche Boxster would have cost me. Seems the zed for some reason is a much higher risk. Maybe its because they are a lot rarer or repairs are more expensive?

Thats expensive I'm 27, 3points for speeding, 7 NCB & live in a farily quiet area & I pay £842 for a R34 GTR with a few mods covered. I insured my S/C Z at 25 running 420hp and that was only just over £1K with every single mod declared. As a standard car last year, I paid something like £550ish

Are you kidding me? Surely you contested that on the basis that, that is a complete load of bull? Nah.......I'd basically have to argue it with every single insurance company in the UK if I did - they all work to the same crap. Insurance is higher if; - you get hit by another party (faultless and NO claim on your own policy). - you live in the middle of no-where (police response times are longer so TWOC'ers apparently target these areas). - you live in the middle of a city (because thats where all the scum live obviously) - you have aftermarket parts which are declared and do NOT enhance performance (but the mod is NOT insured for replacement I might add - apparently if you spend 1000's modifying your beloved pride and joy you won't bat an eyelid at twatting round in it at 150mph until you crash and kill everyone). - If you've been broken into (your 'statistically' more likely to park in the same place........1st thing that I'd do if someone broke into my car would be to park in the exact same spot for sure!). - you have a 'high risk' employment (which makes such a load of difference if your not using the car for work) and finally.........you'll love this one - if you park IN (yes 'in' I did say 'IN......INININININ) a garage your premium will be higher than parking on the drive (because a TWOC'er is more likely to seek the refuge of a garage to nab your motor than he is to do it out in the open on the drive or in the street). Basically get your kecks down and lube up because one way or another they're gonna slip you the high hard one. .........sorry was I ranting again
TomS
Well said Ricey! Insurers have you by the balls and they know it. Until the government or some form or law is passed the majority will be getting increased premiums over and over again needlessly.
TADDY
how many miles are you doing a year? if youve only been driving 4 years and never had a performance car then £1800 in the current climate isn't bad mate, just go for it and once youve done a year and "proven you can handle a 300hp rwd car" there words not mine lol then you will find it drops by qute a bit
