Ricey
Just got the car back from MOT and service - all good, couple of advisories on ARB's at the front and the pads are about ready for changing. MOT, P3 service, gear box oil, diff oil, brake fluid, sparks all done for £358 - with me providing engine oil (£51), K&N oil filter (£10) and plugs (£50).....so all in around £460. Here's the kicker...........'notes from service inspection'; - ARB droplink fitted incorrectly at rear. Levelling dodah fitted upside down. - Spacers fitted incorrectly all round (DANGEROUS - SEEK PROFESSIONAL ADVICE WHEN FITTING AFTERMARKET PARTS). ......sigh..........way to build up someones confidence! I still can't understand how I fitted the spacers incorrectly - he reckons they were the wrong way round but I can't fathom how you could even get that wrong - I thought the side with the countersunk bits were for the spacer nuts to sit in........apparently not
Husky
you are correct. the countersunk sections on the spacers house the nuts that are supplied with them. I would go back and ask him to explain how they are fitted incorrectly and make him look like a prick. Personally I'd go to his manager and say you won't be taking the car there anymore. Husky
as for the ARB drop link, garages make far worse mistakes than that doing simple jobs. It won't make your car explode, just flip it round and forget it.
slimjim
Well, it all WORKS... so it can't be that bad Mine ALSO failed... on the drop links! Got some coming from Alex which I will get the garage to do, as MY skills are even LESS than yours

After a conversation with Husky I'm tempted to agree - I'd be very disappointed if they have thought because I've known them since I was 17 and always taken my cars there. I'm not even sure its physically possible to fit spacers the wrong way round if I'm honest. In fury and to rebel against being told to 'seek professional advice' I've just stripped the brakes on the fiesta

In fury and to rebel against being told to 'seek professional advice' I've just stripped the brakes on the fiesta while on the phone to me Bizarrely multitasking.......although I have come a cropper as the bloody hex socket that I specifically ordered as my set was missing the 7ml isn't long enough........back to ebay for another one Suppose I'm too trusting but I just can't believe he would try and swindle me when I chose to send my business to them when they're 30 minutes away....its obvious that I'm trying to put business their way. I might take a wheel off tomorrow and take a peek - maybe its a specific type of spacer that can go on back to front.
Keyser
..... being told to 'seek professional advice' ....... I get that a lot as well O no its "you need professional help!" but close enough I wouldn't worry mate spacers sound like it's him thats wrong, and when you see my gearbox poking out under the radiator you'll be sure that putting something on the wrong way is just one of them things. Still drives passed the MOT I say crack on
JetSet
- Spacers fitted incorrectly all round (DANGEROUS - SEEK PROFESSIONAL ADVICE WHEN FITTING AFTERMARKET PARTS). Hubcentrics will only fit one way, the only way to fit them incorrectly would be if they were not torqued on properly and he'd spotted that one of the nuts was loose. When I got my new wheels earlier this year one of the nuts holding the spacer on had come loose, in fact it fell off when I removed the wheel . With Rays, you can actually see the nuts through the wheel and its worth taking a peek now and again My spacers were torqued on correctly BTW, I watched each nut going on and being double checked so goodness knows how it worked loose in 1,800 miles Pete
Carla
I best not make any type of sarcastic comment about Paul's infamous 'handy work'.... Really I can't....... ............ ............ ............. But I have added this to the ever growing list ........ of things I love about you Please don't do anything else on my car until you have sought 'professional advice'

Southernspeed
If there is only one way to fit them (which there is) and he's re-fitted them another way (how?) I think I'd be inclined to take a wheel off and make sure he hasn't done something inventive! My ex wife took her MK1 Escort to get some shocks put on the rear (she needed tyres so had this done at the same time), she said they took over an hour fitting them! It's only a 10 minute job for goodness sake. So I had a look. It took an hour as the had to butcher the top hanger so they could instal them upside down ffs!! Iwantone
Good designers will be well aware of (and apply) a Japanese technique called poke yoke. Its all about mistake proofing things and making it impossible for something to be done incorrectly. Looking at the short video of fitting the Brembo spacers, that has been done well, if you tried to put the spacer on back to front, you would have no wheel studs to put your wheel on. Another example could be the anti-roll bar drop links. If the part really is not symmetrical, the designer could have used a different thread size top and bottom. The larger thread would not then have gone through the smaller mounting hole and the part could not be fitted upside down. Steve

slimjim
That vid is exactly how I fitted them..........hmmmm - not impressed. Sounds like THEY don't know what they are talking abut. If they recon you fitted them wrong, why didn't they "fix" them for you while your wheels were off? Because if they ARE "wrong" then shouldn't it have failed the MOT due to it?
