Well worth the time taking the interior apart from the seats back and working out which bits rattle and vibrate. There is a lot of space behind the sub/cubby where you can get rid of a lot of noise as it acts as one big sound stage behind them in an enclosed area. Not sure if my boot will need much, as the sound won't be going in there... or will be bass resonate from the sub in the sub compartment to the boot? Pretty much taken ALL the trim out from the seats back all ready ... So do I need super expensive dynamat? Or can I use something cheaper? Just as good as Dynamat but a lot cheaper - I get it from CarAudioDirect - although they dont seem to be selling much of it any more. You need to cover any panels that will resonate with it. If you tap the panels you'll soon work out which ones need doing and which dont. Wheel arches are worth doing just to dampen out the noise of stones alone. Theres quite a few panels that you'll want to do so make sure you get a "boot kit" or bulk kit of some kind. Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Wasso Posted August 1, 2011 Share Posted August 1, 2011 This might sound odd, but when I was into my installs years and years ago, I used to use the material they use within the fabrics industry. Not sure what the stuff is called, but it's like sheets of cotton wool style fabric that you can purchase in rolls. You can cut it to shape, it weighs nothing and you can stuff this gear into any nook and cranny. A friend of mine "in the know" says if I want to do minimum, all I need to do is 50% of the large door panel, including directly behind my speakers as this will at least stop most of the beginning of the resonating as it it directly behind the speaker. Chris'I, totally see where you are coming from. MOST of the panels "ping" when you flick them, other than the wheel arches, as they are sound proofed all ready. But I agree that they could do with some more. Will look into the SecondSkin. I think I may get Dynamat for the doors... and then something else for everywhere else, as it it all pretty much horizontal and I have heard some of the other stuff doesn't stick as well (or is that a lie as well?) Chris`I Posted August 1, 2011 Share Posted August 1, 2011 As with most things its all about prep. If you get decent deadening from a reputable shop then it will stick if prepped right. If prepped wrong or crap material then it might not stick. WRT the arches, do you have sound deadening on them already on the front and back? My old 350z had a small strip on the fronts IIRC and nothing on the back. Plus if your still running that Gorky jl amp I wouldn't bother Il put some pics of my deadening being done. DannyBoy Posted August 6, 2011 Share Posted August 6, 2011 I've got a whole load of stuff from these guys www.customaudiodesigns.co.uk sitting in my garage waiting to go in the car, give them a ring though because they don't have all their stuff on the website. They do an aluminium backed damping material (dynamat substitute) and various grades of acoustic membrane if you want to get rid of road noise too. MUCH cheaper than the branded car audio products, dead easy to order in bulk, and nice flexible delivery. It'll all be going in next week sometime so i should be able to give some info on whether or not this stuff is just cheap because it's sh!te.
