Michael robinson
As the title states what is the thickest oil I can use in a 350z ? Just need to test something ??
Sam Mcgoo
I would pm or e-mail Oilman from Opie oils - they are pretty good with advise.
djtimo
You could use a 10w-40 no problem. I have used 15w-50 in my engine but its not stock so im not sure if a 15W-50 might be a little heavy for a tight clearance stock motor.

Jez @ H-Dev
Nissan specify 5w-30, 5w-40 or 10w40 - so any of those will be fine. I'm using 10w-50 as the engine in my car has knackered piston rings and it slows the rate of oil loss...
Michael robinson
Jez that's what am trying it for mate as I think my rings have went in one bank , will 10.50 clog the gap ?? Michael robinson
Cheers mate is there any way of telling weather my rings are nackerd or its the oil seals with out striping the engine down completely ?? Just av got loads of smoke coming from the exhaust and oil in all 3 cylinders on the driver side of the engine av removed the hole exhaust and cleaned that ( removed the filter out the cats as one was clogged , so basically decatted ) av replaced the oil with 10-40 which is the thickest the Manual says to use and it's still smokey . I Would like to identifie the fault before I take it to a garage that's all .
Mark@Abbey m/s
we can look down the bores to inspect the cylinder bore condition do a cylinder leakage test , compression test. But you cant inspect the oil rings I am afraid. I thought it was the Rev Up motor that had oil uage issues but it seems the early car's (DE motors) are starting to show problems now
ATTAK Z
Please have a look here folks http://www.350z-uk.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=50961&hilit=+oil+consumption+poll
Michael robinson
Is it true if I put compressed air in through the spark plug hole and I hear it coming through the oil sump that my rings are nackerd ? Just it's strange for one bank of cylinders to go all at once . Could it be my stem seal's ??
Mark@Abbey m/s
Is it true if I put compressed air in through the spark plug hole and I hear it coming through the oil sump that my rings are nackerd In a word no, this will show you have a loss via the piston rings , but the oil control rings work in a different way to the top 2 compression rings. You will always get a small loss as the piston rings have a small gap to allow for expansion so even as the rings are correctly placed you will get some gas pressure loss. The oil rings work by scrapping the oil from the bores. They are the lowest of the rings pack. Mark
Southernspeed
As Mark at Abbey has shown me, putting stock cats on can almost eliminate any exhaust smoke as they burn so hot and burn off the oil. Though only a temporary fix, it does work. So as you've 'de-cat'd ' yours, maybe get hold of some used cats and fit them 'til you can do a motor swap/rebuild. I think Mark may have some available, worth a call.
