Torque Wrenches

Was bout to head out and grab a torque wrench and socket set from my favourite place, Halfords. Thought it'd be best to have a read around on all the torque levels that bolts in the engine and other places need. Thank god I did as I was just going to grab the 40-200nM one.

Looking in the Service Manual it seems that a lot of the bolts that I'll be looking to get off/on only need a small amount of torque 5-20nM with bigger things such as wheel nuts needing 115nM. Looking around on these forums and others people say it's best to get 3 wrenches; low medium and high torque so that everything's pretty much covered.

Are most of the bolts in the engine bay 1/4" or 1/2"? Would these two cover the majority of things and are they any good along with this socket set.

Laser 1/4" - 5-25nM

Halfords Professional 1/2" - 40-200nM

Socket Set

I was mainly looking to use them for changing upper plenum, air intake pipe, grounding kit, wheels, samco hoses.

Thanks :)

Yeah I've good things about the Halfords Professional range, just wanted to check if I need a 1/4" lower end torque wrench for the majority of what I want to be working on.

Will give MM a look now, thanks!

Check ebay for snap on ones at reasonable prices. If you can get one at a good price, get snap on to calibrate it (about £40 I think) and it'll serve you well for years. If it needs torqueing, use something you can trust. Maybe Halfords stuff is better than it used to be but personally I wouldn't trust it.

That torque wrench is really good and very strong. I keep double checking it with the tyre place wrenches and its always accurate...or as accurate as they are anyway

Cool, it's about time they started selling decent tools. They used to be laughable!

The hellfrauds one is really good but don't be tempted to buy a cheap one from elsewhere for the low nms. I got one from B&Q to do the plenum.........thought I'd be a good boy and test it first.........sheared the head off a bolt in the shed when set to 5nms!!!!!

You get what you pay for.

Halfords do some decent stuff these days - those ratchet spanners for £39.99 are an awesome deal too.........plus if you sign up with Quidco you can get cashback via your debit card instore :teeth:

Bought the 150 piece socket set and the Laser torque wrench for low end things. Think I'll grab the Halfords 60-200 in a few weeks time if/when I need it. This Laser one should do everything I need for now.
