nij1983
Hi all, I'm planning to buy a 313 Z fairly soon. At the moment I'm checking out insurance quotes. I've read some posts from other members who are paying around £1k, which I think is a good deal. I'm 27, have 4 yrs no claims, no convictions, no points, no accidents, licence for 10 years. My mrs will also be on the insurance (in the hope that she brings it down!) - shes 27, no convictions, no points, no accidents, licence for 9 yrs. I am getting quotes of £1800+, the cheapest being Admiral. The car will be parked on the road overnight, but that cant cause a huge amount of variation in the cost, and I've been opting for £0 voluntary excess. Can anyone recommend some insurance companies, or even insight into why the price is so high! I'd happily pay £1000 but £1800 seems extortionate. Thanks, Niraj
BladesGrant
Have you tried Sky or Chris Knott? They are traders on here, a lot of people use Admiral though on here and get good qoutes. Suppose it could be based on your postcode as well.
webber
I use Sky and pay 680 fully comp. I have similar stats but 8 years NCB and a stockport postcode which Chris Knott wont even touch... Try sky
coldel
We pay about £500 I think it is through Diamond Insurance, wife is the main driver with me named, fully comp, windscreen cover, 3 years NCB. Parking on the road is actually cheaper than parking in a garage or driveway so no worries on that front. We are both 35+ though...
nij1983
havent tried either of those. the car isn't modded and most likely wont be modded. I cant believe a postcode could make a difference of over £1k. insurance companies are nuts! will try both sky and chris knott
rabbitstew
That does seem a bit steep, but maybe its your age? Im nearly 40 and the cheapest i was getting was 800quid. The specialist insurers, for me at least, came in at £1400. Insurance companies just seem to hate the zed, it would have been cheaper for me to insure a porsche or a m3. I usually find confused.com pretty good at showing the cheapest. You can then play with things like the excess to see what difference that makes on the quote. Id increase the excess slightly. Also, maybe change your job title slightly - as some titles make a huge difference. Did you put down that it has a thatcham cat 1 alarm on it? My insurance company told me the 313 has one fitted as standard. Admiral, elephant and Adrian Flux were the cheapest for me. Postcode does make a difference but not by a grand. My current address costs me 10% more than my old one due to the postcode.
coldel
Insurance companies are very clued up, they run financial programs using stats based on age, gender, accident likelihood etc and price accordingly. By all accounts they are still not making enough money I read in the news, some premiums have gone up 40% for younger drivers this year. Although, female drivers will lose their femalability benefits regarding insurance in December when insurance companies will not be allowed to price using gender as a factor. marzman
Bump up the voluntary excess - that usually knocks a lot off for me... Im 27, 6 yrs NCB and i get quotes of about £1000, but went with Admiral Multicar, and it came down to £735. Do you have a second car in your household you could insure later this year, to make yours into a multicar policy?

nij1983
looks like i need to play around with the quote some more. I'll only be driving the car less than 5k per year, since I work in london. worse still, my mrs is an analyst at RBS...you'd think working in the insurance arm of a bank might give her some brownie points ( ) but no such luck. BladesGrant
Sometimes insurance qoutes are just bonkers. I showed two qoutes I had recently one for my modded Zed valued at £10k and the second a standard GTR valued at £30k. The GTR was £500 cheaper than the zed!! TOYBOY
I put my sons details into confused.com for a laugh, 20 years old/zero no claims, to insure a Focus RS, cheapest quote was £25000. Back on task, up your voluntary excess, it does make a difference.

Chipster
I'm 27 with 3ncb and mine is £850 with Admiral 10 month accelerator.
rabbitstew
I wonder if the 2nd year with a zed is much cheaper than the first? I had a lot of insurance companies asking what my previous car was or had I previously had any high performance cars like an evo or a skyline?!?!!!! In theory if you have driven a zed for 12 months without stacking it then statistically you should be a sound investment for year 2 and it should be a lot cheaper to insure. TomS
I had a quote waiting on Admiral for a few weeks until I go pickup my zed and overnight, without any changes, it went up £300. Phoned them up and they're looking into it but I went on today and it's gone back down?! Crazy! I forgot to add my PC30 "conviction" (stopping too close to a pedestrian crossing to let my girlfriend put something in a post box), and that's added 50% on to my quote, not happy! alibongo
I took out a policy with Sky Insurance. Please don't make the same mistake. As we all know, you get what you pay for. Don't go near this lot. The underwriter they use are very small and are not interested in the policy holder making any changes to the initial policy info. I changed address during my policy period and they cancelled my cover, saying my new address was uninsurable. This going from a Manchester postcode to a sleepy Lancs village. All other online quotes giving my new postcode as a much lower risk area. Took them to the financial ombudsman and they had to reimburse me, but it took alot of time. choptop
Really does depend on postcode. Garaging a car, despite what others may say, does make a massive difference. If you use it to commute to work that can increase premiums as well. Opt for a small voluntary excess as well. You can also get excess insurance policy's as well which even taken into the overall cost can bring your premium down. Have you tried Direct Line? Grumpy Griff
Direct Line has always been there or thereabouts for all my cars so far (all have been some sort of sporting pedigree after the obligatory first shed). Worth spending an evening putting details into a variety of online quotes - try as many as you can, from the bigger, well known lot, to Tescos etc. and also the go-compare type quotes (never proved to be cheap for me). It seems to change year by year who is the cheapest, but also be aware that bigger companies are more likely to have better cover in the small print etc. Postcode also has a bigger effect than you might think - makes sense, the more cars nicked in your local area the worse it's going to be. One strange thing happened last year - a quote I got for fully comp was actually cheaper than 3rd Party Fire and Theft (with everything else the same). This was explained by the insurer that it's purely down to statistics. More people with 3rd Party Fire and Theft cover claimed, so therefore the statistics say they are a worse risk and hence the premium rose for 3rd Party Fire and Theft and fully comp stayed as it was. WEIRD !!!

Ouch that sounds painful, kinda worrying too as I just signed up with them. Must say so far they have been very good and have got good feedback from members on this forum.
