Upgrading Bose and Pre Outs???

Hi all,

Newbie here. So I've spent a lot of time reading up on the forum about the skippy Bose headunit (which I have  ) and what is needed to replace the headunit for an aftermarket one and what cables i need etc..

So I'm going to change it soon, maybe this week, just need to decide on what headunit I want to get. Anyway, after reading up on some headunits not producing a loud enough sound, maybe down to a lower voltage pre outs ie 2v and below. Now you buy an adaptor that has pre out on it so you can hook up the pre outs from your new shiny headunit. The little Bose amp thats in the car does not have pre outs (or should that be pre in's?? lol). Now I could be wrong but surely using the pre outs from the new head unit are ment to be a low level out put hence why some people get a low sounding system? Would it not be correct to use the actual speaker wire outputs from the new headunit as I thought that these speaker wire outputs where high outputs? I even remember me having an old amp that had the option for normal low level inputs (phono pre outs) and high level inputs (speaker wire outputs). So basically what im trying to get at is why is there an adaptor for the bose system that is not ment to run on the low level pre outs from a head unit. Maybe I'm barking up the wrong tree? lol.

Hope that all makes sense. It does in my head anyway.

Cheers

lol cheers for the reply. I was a bit confused by this but if the amp is ment to take low level inputs then it all makes sense now. 4v head unit it is then.

Ive been looking at Alpine double dins but non of the recent double dins models seem to have 4v pre outs. Does anyone know of recent model Alpine head units with 4v pre outs? I really liked the Alpine iXA-W404R but only has 2v pre outs. Anyone have any experience with this one?

I wanted to have Alpine as i already have an Alpine sat nav system plumbed into the car. Its a stand alone system though so not absolutely essential to have an Alpine head unit I guess.

hmmmmmmm it is tempting. But its starting to get a bit pricey. Starting to wish i kept my old alpine cda-9955 from my old car. Was getting a bit old but still worked great unlike my bose one lol. I like the alpine stuff but its like you buy the basic head unit first, then most of the time you have to buy all these optional extras like bluetooth, sound processors, sat nav etc etc lol. Gets expensive. I really wanna update my Alpine satnav system but when ive looked into getting the lastest dvd its like £260 for the lastest maps. Seems a tad steep if you ask me lol.

I was looking at the JVC KW-AVX830. Quite tempted by it. Seems like you get lots of features for a not bad price. But then again it might be a case of you get what you pay for. Will have to read some reviews later.

I have just fitted an jvc 810 and it seems ok. It depends on what you want go for alpines high end stuff if you want to eq your system run active from your HU or add processors or time delays but as far as multimedia units go jvc is much much better espically for the price. The only other option which is the best of both worlds would be a high end alpine with a pc.
