CEL Light on - safe to drive?

Recommended Posts

I know I have mentioned this in another thread - but need some specific advice.

After my clutch problem which is now fixed - I drove the car home last night (<10miles) and as I got home the amber CEL light came on.

I rang Nissan today to get some advice and they said to bring the car back down. I queried whether the vehicle was safe to drive with the CEL light on as I dont want to cause damage by driving it, if its the start of something serious - but the guy in the workshop said that if it was serious - the CEL light would be RED indicating that the car is in limp mode. I only did about 100 yards in the car with the CEL light on and was only doing very low speed down my lane - so probably wouldnt have been able to tell from driving the car if it had gone into limp mode.

I dont have the manual with me right now so cant check - but googling hasnt returned any information about a red CEL light.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Id drive carefully until you know exactly what the problem is. With my other halves car the engine warning light was on for about 8 months and didnt cause any problems - in that case id already done a full OBD scan and established that the problem was simply the cat converter on the way out.

I drove mine for a couple of months with various CEL lights on but I had already diagnosed what the problem was and why they were on

I expect someone has just not plugged a sensor in properly somewhere

If you search on here you will find a guide on how to pull the code from the ecu using the pedals ;)

You can read the codes and reset the ecu if it's nothing serious.

See if it comes back, if it does, further investigation may be needed. Sometimes these flash up, reset and never come back again and even if they do it's usually nothing serious.

Procedure can be found in the guides section - viewtopic.php?f=35&t=89

Here is the procedure and error codes.

- Manual Method

Here is a quick way to reset your ECU. It is also known to clear codes thrown, and turn off the "Service Engine Soon" Light.

Confirm that accelerator pedal is fully released, turn ignition switch “ON†and wait 3 seconds.

Repeat the following two procedures quickly five times within 5 seconds:

Fully depress the accelerator pedal (HARD).

Fully release the accelerator pedal.

Wait 7 seconds, fully depress the accelerator pedal and keep it for approx. 10 seconds until the CEL starts blinking.

Fully release the accelerator pedal (while the CEL is still blinking)

**at this point you need to count the CEL light flashes, think it starts by falshes 10 times slowly to indicate it is beginning then faster for the code. For example if it flashes 10 times slowly, 3 times fast, 2 times fast, 5 times fast 10 times slow then the code would be 325, then just match to the code list.

Wait about 10 seconds.

Fully depress the accelerator pedal and keep it for more than 10 seconds.

Fully release the accelerator pedal (The CEL light will continue to blink).

Turn ignition switch to “OFF†position and now you can start the car. The CEL light should be gone.

If you search on here you will find a guide on how to pull the code from the ecu using the pedals ;)

Code is 850 (10 slow flashes, 8 fast, 5 fast, 10 fast, 10 slow). Looked it up in the error code table and its not one of the ones listed.

Blimey that was quick!

Mmm might be worth trying again. The first time I tried it it didn't make sense but after a bit of practice Its quite easy.

Have another go. Its also possible that it will flash more than one code. which can get confusing when trying to count the flashes. They will be separated by the 10 slow flashes.

Had already checked it when you posted ;)

I checked the code a few times - it always flashes with the sequence I gave above. There only seems to be one code stored.

I'll check again later just to make sure I havent miscounted - but i'm pretty sure I didnt.

I did find that when looking around but I didnt realise the OBD codes were universal as that car is an Infinity.

I have just found this.

http://www.tankota.net/repair/Repair_Ma ... p0705p.pdf

If i'm reading this right - the car must have recieved a signal that it was in neutral whilst I was actually driving in gear.

If that is right - then its a bit of a relief as it doesnt sound too serious, but i'll still have to get it sorted and reset.

Maybe this code can be added to the above list :teeth:

Hopefully it is something like you said, it is amazing what weird problems can occur

I had my ABS lights on and it turned out it was a switch in the rear lights telling the ECU that even though I had my foot on the brake pedal something was wrong as the lights were not coming on :scare: So I drove around for a month with no ABS and no TC all because of a £15 switch
