nicon2k
I have finally got the courage up to ask the question as i fear the answer will cost me lots of money. For a while now my car has made a whining noise in first a second gear. If i accelerate (When the engine is warm) to around 3000 - 4000 RPM in first and then take my feet off the peddles, i can hear a whining sound as the revs fall back down. The same is true for second gear although the sound is not as loud here. If i dip the clutch the sound persists so i guess it must be something to do with the gearbox or the transmission. If i drop down from third to second at high revs i get the same sound. On very cold mornings the sound is very much louder until the car warms up (Obviously i am keeping the revs low until the engine has a chance to warm up). There is no effect on performance and other then the odd time when its a bit notchy, the gear selection is fine. Any ideas? Preferably ideas that don't cost a lot of money to fix...... Woody
Gearbox oil level ok? Could be a dry bearing makeing the sound. This is just a guess. One of the boffins will be along shortly to.correct me
Ekona
What engine? The HR engine makes significantly more gearbox whine than the DE in my experience.
nicon2k
What engine? The HR engine makes significantly more gearbox whine than the DE in my experience. Say what now? Its a 2006 car, has the new interior and all that jazz.
Ekona
You have the DE revup engine then.
nicon2k
So it should not be too noisy then? I dont suppose it could be something simple like an oil top up or a change?
Ekona
Can't hurt to change the gearbox oil, when was it last done?

Ekona
Right, definitely worth doing along with the diff oil too.
spursmaddave
I had a kind of similar thing except instead of a whining it was a vibration, change of the gearbox oil and it was fine
