CaptainSensible Posted January 25, 2011 Share Posted January 25, 2011 I’ve just been pondering this. To me there are several ingredients to make a car a true classic, and the Zed ticks all the boxes. A niche market – the Zed is not a mainstream car. It’s impractical, noisy, and a bit extreme for most people. Few would consider one as their daily driver. Low production numbers - there are comparatively few around. It’s pretty unusual I ever see another Zed when I am on my travels. No new (350) Zeds are being made. Unusual styling – most modern cars look pretty bland to me. The Zed is very distinctive. It’s never going to win a beauty contest but it is striking. Speed – unless it’s a very quirky or ground breaking design I think most classics need to have performance credentials. Classic performance cars are usually lauded for the way they drive rather than their outright speed. I think the Zed ticks that box. I believe that in a few years that the 350Z will be revered as one of the last of a dying breed, namely the hairy chested sports car. I will be proud to say I owned one. Surely with tighter emissions regulations, fuel prices rising etc. the days of large engined cars with lots of cylinders are numbered. Generally speaking classics tend to attract a large enthusiast audience quite early on in their lives - which seems to be the case. I have had many now true classics that were not when I had them ie, Mk1 and 2 Escort Mexicos and RS 2000's, TR6, Datsun 240z,260z and 260z+2, BMW2002Tii, Mercedes SL250 Pagoda and the rearest an Alfa Romeo 2600 Spider only 26 right hand drives made I sold them all at the going rate at the time boy do I wish I kept the Merc now fetching £50,000 and the Alfa probably I could name my price. rtbiscuit Posted January 25, 2011 Share Posted January 25, 2011 wouldn't say its the last of the hairy chest sports cars, the 370 just came out, bmw run a v8 in a 3 series, merc run several big engines, so does alfa, aston and ferrari. i think it will be a classic in the respects of something like the spitefire or mg midget was, but not in the respects of say a ferrari dino. The 300 (both Z31 and Z32) are appreciating for good ones but still bargains to be had. I see no reason why the 350 won't be the same. choptop Posted January 25, 2011 Share Posted January 25, 2011 I think the Zed will go down in history as a great car, jusy like the escort, but think the 240 Zeds will be the ones that rise in value, and become true classics. Master Z Posted January 25, 2011 Share Posted January 25, 2011 I have owned a few classics in my time which I went on to sell,I have decided the only way to guarantee a future classic is to keep my 350 for the next 30 or so years(god willing) I have done 1700 miles in the last 3yrs of ownership and have 15k on the clock,I know it's a sin not to drive the car much but I just want people to say years from now,Have you seen that old ****er driving that mint zed,wonder if he'd sell it? Will it be difficult to find an unmolested car in the future? (Similar to a Cossie?)
