Jay
Hey guys and girls..... I am looking for a bit of guideance from you more experienced lot lol. I have just bought an engagement ring for my gf and plan of popping the question later this month (she has no idea) But what I need to know is how do I go about insuring this? Do i have to put it under my house insurance and then insure it seperately OR is there a company who can specialise on JUST insuring the ring. In the nicest possible way my gf is a nightmare with stuff........ I bought her a blooming gucci watch a while back which set me well over a grand So insurance on an engagement ring is a must before she even has it on her finger Any help would be great Cheers guys and gals
martinmac
Its down to cost mate and I wouldnt ever ask how much it cost. Just call whoever does your contents insurance, they usually need specific items over a certain value. Or as a last resort read the policy. Ricey
Usually the shop flogging you it tries to sell you an insurance policy. House insurance is a definite possibility - just ring them and ask if you can add it on as a 'special item' or something.
Jay
Cheers guys. I got it especially made by a jewller so he doesnt specialise in policies etc. Martin as for cost........... too bloody much

R35LEE
Ye house insurance will cover it as an itemised item of jewellery for next to nothing as an addition on your policy. Shop insurance will be the more expensive route but it she loses it (heaven forbid) then at least it wouldn't affect your policy when it's time to renew with your house 3rd option: DON'T DO IT JAY and buy the zed something
Jay
3rd option: DON'T DO IT JAY and buy the zed something That was an option mate lol. Sell the 350z and buy a 370z but I really have put this off for as long as I can prob get away with So the 370z will just have to wait
speedy
The house will cover it for sure, my girl friends is on there - Think as a rule of thumb anything over 3k has to be specified....make sure you take picture of it as well... Jay
Kool, cheers guys... I will give them a call as it will need to be specified then. Here goes more money out the door

rtbiscuit
house insurance, but you'll need a certificate of authentication/value from the maker. should say the value of the ring for insurance purposes etc. and its that the insurers will be able to base their quotation on. slimjim
Yup... you need a certificate to show it's worth.... Preferably by a jeweler you DIDN'T buy it from. Tam's is covered by our house insurance, as a listed item. Make sure you speak to them about it! Also, sounds daft, but a decent safe is always a good investment. We have one, it's fire and flood proof. So you keep your insurance policies in it too. As well as birth certificates. and the ring... till you swap it out for your wedding certificate
M13KYF
I would check your contents insurance though. They can have limits on jewellery which may not be enough
Chesterfield
Hi Jay, Depending on value, it may already be covered under your home insurance as most policies will cover individual items away from home up to a certain value, however this is not always the case, and the values covered can vary dramatically from policy to policy, so best to check. If it is not already covered, (which to be fair is most likely the case as engagement rings tend to be expensive fellows) then with most policies you can cover individual items up to their value, though you may need receipt evidence to back this up in the event of a claim. It is also adviseable to make sure you have good quality photographs of the item too just in case. You can cover items over the standard included individual item limit either for in the home (as would be the case for paintings/artwork for example) or for away from home (Jewelery/expensive bikes etc). Adding individual items can be quite expensive in relation to the rest of the policy however, so be prepared for a possible shock. Hope that helps. M13KYF
+1 taking photos is a very good point
Chesterfield
PS - something else we have done is get a fake ring that looks exactly like the original and use that whenever you may be going abroad on holliday when you may have to rely on bog standard hotel safes etc. The wife still gets to have her jewelery on, but without the wory of losing something very expensive. If your (hopefully soon to be) fiance is paranoid about losing the ring you bought her, its something to consider as an option

Vik54
Jay - you and Laura don't live together do you? House insurance usually draws limit at £1k - £3k for individual items and will ask you to list valuable items. She'll need to add it to her house insurance and you'll need a valuation certificate (which includes photos) to do this - a reciept of purchase is not sufficient - you want to cover the cost of like for like replacement - especially as you've gone down the bespoke route - so it needs to be insured for market value. In my case my ring was valued at £1k more than we'd spent as we'd sourced a certificated diamond direct from the London Diamond Bourse and had the ring made. Our house insurance went up by £80 odd quid
Jay
Nope we dnt life together just now vik.... so I was going to put it under my house insurance for just now and pay it that way. But it would have been better if there was a company that specialises in seperate things like wedding rings. I have already had the evaluation from my jewler but also another one. The 2nd jewler valued it at 3k more than what I have paid........ which makes me smile
Vik54
Laura'll need to have it on her house insurance Also make sure any valuation you have says on it "For Insurance purposes"
