UpRev insurance

I've had all my cars mapped and crashed them all. Never had any issues at all. It's upti yourself if u want to take the risk

Love the honesty.............

Seriously though how would they ever tell your car had been remapped? The ECU looks is the standard unit so short of plugging it in there no way they could tell.

For goodness sake guys, of course a remap can be spotted, and trust me it probably would be if you had a high value claim . Run someone down and an insurer will do some very careful investigations, they have employees trained for this sort of thing, it is not hard to tap into a car's ECU and look at the map, max boost reading etc.

As mentioned, there are insurers who cater for modified cars so why risk it??

Will they ever find out about the remap? Probably not. Is it worth £12K (or whatever your car is worth) to take that chance? Definitely not.

Change insurer next renewal, there are companies out there that don't care about things like that.

A good post, all apart from the 'probably not', which I would change to a 'maybe not'.

Probably by searching the internet and seeing people's posts ;)

Not picking on you on purpose out of Porsche 911 jealously Dan :p but the above would only happen at the investigation stage, it would not happen at quote stage or during a policy unless there is a claim. I do not want 350Z-UK members thinking that we are here looking for undislosed modifcations, we have nothing to gain by that and I would have serious objections to it.

Thanks

Pfft, bloody interweb stalkers ;)

You're quite right to correct me though, I certainly meant that they (you) wouldn't be stalking forums looking to trip people up. The amount of people that do post up in the same thread "I've got X mod and it gives me loads more BHP!" quickly followed by "Nah, I'm not telling my insurance, they'll never find out!" is worryingly high.

This is why I changed insurance to a company that will insure me fully for all modifications, especially where the Nitrous is concerned. I begrudge paying higher premiums, although in changing it didn't cost any more than with my (at the time) current provider. I also get more benefits from the policy.

What I wouldn't want to happen is for an accident to occur that is my fault and I'm not insured. It's as simple as that.

I may never have an accident - but it's the worry of thinking "what if".... what can save you £xx per month/year won't pay for the concequences if it all goes Pete Tong!

Exactly.

And without trying to put myself into a hole, I can tell you now for 100% that when it happens it is the single worst feeling in the world. Nothing car-related even comes close.

I wouldn't want to even contemplate the issues of a claim when not fully insured, especially if there was a death somewhere along the line. Life would not be the same, and the guilt!!

Glad I'm totally covered......

Hi All,

Has anyone had any luck getting their cars insured after an UpRev? I just phoned my insurer (Admiral) to ask about the increase to my premium if I added de-cats, changed y-pipe and UpReved. Apparently they'd charge £50 PA for the de-cats and y-pipe (classed as a full exhaust basically) but they said they wouldn't cover the upRev (ECU mapping) at all as it's apparently high-risk!

And I was going to put a deposit down with Abbey today as well... GRRR!:rant:

Haydn.

Sorry to hear that Haydn. I took out a new policy with Sky this year and have just got off the phone with them to see what effect adding uprev to my car would have on my policy. They will cover it......for a 25% premium increase. Ouch :scare:

Unsure weather to go ahead now!

You told them that the purpose was to increase the mpg though?

Haha tbh I didn't(!), and the only thing they asked was how much extra power it would give. I said hardly anything, 10bhp if I'm lucky and that was that. Might PM Ollie @ Sky as the increase does seem pretty excessive and I could have explained it a lot better to them..........!

Sometimes sky act as an intermediatry and are tied to what the third party might say, so for example they might have a remap tick box, regardless of whether its 10 or 50bhp, my experience of Sky, which on the whole has been very good was that I paid an initial high% increase for adding a couple of mods, and that then things didnt add hardly anything, but obviously you still have to declare them.

I have 2 cars with them now..

Update on this after speaking with Ollie @ Sky, and basically confirms what you thought MrLizard. As far as the underwriter is concerned, an ECU remap on any car attracts a standard increase in premium in light of the fact that if you have other mods the power gains could be significant (in the case of the zed I guess FI etc).

So now I just have to decide whether to bite the bullet and go for uprev!

Must say thanks to Ollie for a very speedy response on this and Sky's continued good customer service

Yes, to clarify, this is a standard loading. The policy underwriter has this standard loading across the board for this modification.. the same modification on a different car could give a huge power increase, also, this modification coupled with other modifications would also significantly increase the power.

The leading is similar if not more relaxed with this underwriter in comparions to other specialist underwriters.

I appreciate in this case it may have been done for the MPG aspect but we have to look at the bigger picture. We get customers who try things on (not saying the customer is in this case at all), eg I've added this boost controller but I will only be running standard boost, or I have fitted the nitrous kit, but I'll never use it on the road etc.

Thanks and have a good weekend everyone

Considering with UpRev and minor mods on a 350Z you'll only looking to achieve what the manufacturers state as the standard BHP with maybe a few more unnoticeable horses and the main reason for doing this is to make the car more responsive with an added benefit of extra MPG it's a shame insurance companies don't consider this more on a car by car basis, maybe they could except dyno figures as an estimate although I guess they could be faked by a friendly tuner.
