Diff problems...

After all that work in getting a vice to get to work with replacing the open diff to a Quafie diff and the race finished short of just needing to the bloody thing!

Have serious issues following the below guide:

http://forums.nicoclub.com/diy-quaife-l ... 14548.html

(should kill him for not writing a proper how-to for a start...)

At the 'soft mallet' on the axles one of them refuses to budge, no matter how many wacks I've given it with the mallet it refuses to give way. I'm WAY to new to the differential scene to know what's ok or not so decided to give it up after ALL the pain I suffered getting it out from under neath the car

Anyone know what could be the issue?

It was all going so 'well', considering that I had to do a lot of DIY MacGyver things to get it out :dummy: (might keep them to myself... or not)

Anders...take a deep breath and try to explain again...it really isn't clear from your post what you have or haven't managed to get done (other than remove the diff and attempt to fit the Quaifie)...or what you're asking exactly

(not that I could answer anyway but maybe with a better explanation someone can help ;) )

Can I take off the 4 17mm bolts first and then try it? Or does have to be done in that order?? Wonder if something feel in there while I was marking up the first side.... tried to put the side I got out back but it no longer slides in fully... :-(

Anders!!! You and your crazy meddling?!?! You sure you've not accidentally tried to install a volvo diff

do you even know where the diff is on your car?

If your mallet method is not working, then a couple of flat tyre levers will do the trick.

One either side and just prise the axle off.

not sure I know what you mean... oh wait I think I do, I could use socket wrench extension bars too? Might give this a bash in the early mornings :bangin: thanks!

Spring circlip 38225+A is all that holds the axle in place.

confused0083.gif mine isn't a LSD though, guess it's the same axle type though...only thing I can think of then is that the clip has got stuck somehow... will for sure have another look before :surrender:

I knew there was a reason I'd never attempt this job myself.

Fair dues for trying though.

hardest part was to actually get it out, it was 'easy' sailing from here... not to be! Oh and to get the f*cker back in will be an interesting task!

what alex says or wanted to say is that what you want to remove is actually held tight just with a metal ring. 2 of those tyre removal flat metal bars alex is mentioning do the job. one each side or at quarter to 3. if you put the same amount of pressure on both bars, the 2 sides of the diff that look like stars come out fairly easy. just a bit catchy at first. if you are trying to do it with one tool only you ll be lucky to get them out plus you may damage the rings.

oh and make sure they dont land on your foot if the car is on the ramp. ;):teeth:

Got to give a +1 on this to be honest mate......you are a bit of legend for trying. :#1:

Might be worth cracking the wd40 out and having another crack in the morning.

Well done Anders.....he who dares wins.

Even more well done for ignoring everything I say........its usually for the best

;)

Think I've come to a game over area anyway, looking like I don't have the required stuff for the LSD going in so it's down to hand this box with toys over to a garage I think :teeth: much to the gf delight and my wallet's dissmay

well at least you learned...

what the diff looks like inside? It's all good experience, at least it won't cost that much to get the bearings and ring over to the Quaife diff get it checked properly runout, drive pionion and tooth contact (was a bit worried about that) and closed up ready for me to put back under the car... I'm going to put a guide together or a thread or something to try and put light on the difficulties in doing this job and to have the correct tool list AND part list prior to starting off the project. The DIY bonkers stuff I read isn't very good or accurate and the FSM isn't detailed enough on 'how' to get some things done. Leason learnt hey ;)
